The Republic of Sierra Leone is located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, surrounded by Guinea to the north and east and bordering Liberia to the southeast. Its capital is Freetown. It is known as the Republic of Sierra Leone in Taiwan and in Mainland China and Hong Kong. Sierra Leoneans have a low standard of living. Once a source of slaves for Europe, it is now one of the poorest countries in the world. Purchasing power, health and longevity, and educational attainment lag behind the world, and construction is severely lacking. Much of the economy has collapsed due to civil war.
The local economy relies primarily on mining, particularly diamonds. The most well-known of these are blood diamonds mined from Sierra Leone. The film "Blood Diamond," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, depicts these local blood diamonds. The coastal region offers beautiful scenery and is ideal for tourism. However, due to inconvenient transportation and a lack of funding, tourism resources have been underdeveloped.
It has a tropical monsoon climate with high temperatures and heavy rainfall, making it suitable for travel all year round.
Kapok Tree
Visitors to Freetown must visit the enormous Kapok tree in the city center. Standing tall at an intersection, it stands over 30 meters tall and more than ten arms' width thick. Despite being over 500 years old, it remains strong and lush, vibrant and full of life. Legend has it that this ancient tree was once where Western colonizers gathered their slaves for the trade. It has become a place where the people of Sierra Leone celebrate festivals with singing and dancing.
