The War Elephant Stairs, also known as the Fighting Elephant Terrace, are located within Angkor Thom. They were once used by the kings of Angkor to select their mounts, inspect their horses, and hold ceremonial ceremonies. The War Elephant Stairs consist of three platforms, approximately 350 meters long and 2-3 meters high. The long bases are carved with lifelike carvings of elephant heads and trunks.
During the Angkor period, a grand elephant fighting competition was held here every year. Only the elephant that won the fight could become the king's mount. These giant elephant stone carvings seem to be telling you the tragic story of the elephant fight back then.
The southern staircase is supported by three elephants, each holding a platform and its trunk curled with a lotus. The surrounding walls are decorated with lifelike carvings of numerous Hindu deities and animals, including lions, sacred birds, rhinoceroses, hippos, and other animals. Reliefs depicting hunting scenes can also be seen. Some of the carvings are still relatively intact, demonstrating the exquisite artistry of the time.
Siem Reap is located in a low-latitude area and has a tropical climate. May to October is summer, with temperatures hovering around 33°C; November to April is winter in Siem Reap, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C, making it the best tourist season.

Night visits are not available at the War Elephant Stairs. However, Angkor Wat and some other temples offer special light shows and events during peak tourist seasons.
The War Elephant Stairs can be crowded, especially during peak tourist season. Early morning visits, just after sunrise, are typically the least crowded times.
