Introducing Golden Lotus Square

Located between Rua do Gomes, Avenida da Bethesda, and Avenida da Amigo in Macau's New Port area, the Golden Lotus Square was established to commemorate the handover of Macau's sovereignty in 1999. It has become a famous landmark and tourist attraction in Macau. It is also the location for the Macau SAR government's flag-raising ceremony every year on National Day and the anniversary of Macau's return to China.

After Macao's return to China, the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China presented a sculpture titled "Lotus of Prosperity," one large and one small. The large sculpture, weighing 6.5 tons and standing 6 meters tall, with a maximum diameter of 3.6 meters, is placed in the Golden Lotus Square. The smaller sculpture, 1 meter in diameter and 0.9 meters high, is on display at the Macao Handover Memorial Museum. The main body, consisting of the stem, petals, and core, is cast in bronze with gold gilding. The lotus-like base, composed of 23 stacked red granite pieces, symbolizes the everlasting prosperity of the three islands of Macao. The lotus is Macao's official flower.
