Castel dell'Ovo is a castle in Naples, Italy, located on the small island of Megarides. It is the oldest castle in Naples with a history of more than 2,000 years. Legend has it that when the castle was built in the 6th century BC, a wizard placed an egg there. If the egg was broken, the castle would disappear and bring disaster to Naples.
This magnificent villa was built by the Roman nobleman Lucullus and is where the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus , was exiled by the Roman commander Odoacer. In the 1st century BC, Castel dell'Ovo was the residence of wealthy Roman merchants, and in the 5th century, a church community built a church here.
Starting in the 9th century, the castle was converted into a defensive structure by the Norman, German, Angevin, and Spanish nobles who successively ruled Naples. Castel dell'Ovo offers one of the best views of the Bay of Naples, especially at sunset, when the majestic sun descent into the sea creates a truly romantic scene.
Climb up to the Castel dell'Ovo at sunset and gaze out the windows for a breathtaking view of Naples' romantic seascape and sunset. Lights flicker along the Bay of Naples, boats moored beneath the stars drift on the waves, and sky lanterns rise and fall.
