Located in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, the Zhalong Wetland Ecological Reserve boasts a temperate continental monsoon climate and boasts the most pristine and biodiverse wetland complex at its latitude. Primarily protecting red-crowned cranes and other rare wild birds, the reserve also houses the wetland ecosystem. As the world's largest red-crowned crane reserve, it is known as a "natural paradise" for birds and waterfowl. The Wuyur River, a tributary of the Nenjiang River, loses its course here, overflowing into a vast swamp, home to dense reeds and abundant fish and shrimp, creating an ideal habitat for waterfowl.
You can go to Zhalong to see cranes all year round. Generally, April and May are the egg-laying season for red-crowned cranes, and you can see crane nests. From July to August, the young cranes grow up, and reed flowers float in the reed marshes. You can also see crane families. This is probably the golden season for watching cranes. The temperature is lower in winter, but you can walk on the ice and observe the red-crowned cranes up close.
