Malang or Probolinggo for Mt. Bromo and Tumpak Sewu?

My friend and I will be traveling from Jogja to hike Mt. Bromo and then do Tumpak Sewu before traveling on to Banyuwangi. We are trying to keep costs down and make the most of our time, and are happy to take public transport when available. We'd like to do Mt. Bromo one day and then go visit Tumpak Sewu before heading Banyuwangi on the next day. Where would be best to stay, Malang or Probolinggo? And how to get from Tumpak Sewu to Banyuwangi?

I prefer Malang IMHO more pleasant than Probolinggo, with better tourist facilities.

For Tumpak Sewu, it is best to spend the night near the train station, there are lots of cheap accommodations. Then rent a car and driver IDR 700k More or less

From Malang to Probolinggo Using Train

Spend the night around Probolinggo train station, join the joining tour which you can book in the train station area with an all in price of around IDR 600k

I suggest you to stay at malang,

So from Yogyakarta take a night train and arrived at malang train station early morning, and take a day trip to tumpak Sewu waterfall and going to Bromo after that,so you can stay at Bromo area for 1 night, and a next day after Bromo trip you can going to Probolinggo bus station or train station to go to banyuwangi...

If you need more information don't hesitate for asking...

Malang is the right choice

🚐 Travel Advice: Getting to Tumpak Sewu from Bromo & Beyond (with Local Help Available)

If you're planning to visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall after hiking Mount Bromo, and you're wondering about the best route, I’m happy to share some travel tips based on local knowledge (I'm from Lumajang, the region where the waterfall is located).

🧭 Recommended Route from Bromo or Probolinggo to Tumpak Sewu

You may consider staying in Probolinggo, as it’s a convenient hub for accessing both Mount Bromo and southern East Java.

From Probolinggo, there are two main ways to reach Tumpak Sewu (in Lumajang):

✅ 1. Public Bus

Take a bus from Probolinggo Bus Terminal to Wonorejo Terminal (Lumajang). From there, it’s about 1–1.5 hours to the waterfall.

✅ 2. Train (Safer and More Comfortable)

You can take a train from Probolinggo Station to Klakah Station or Jatiroto Station (both in Lumajang). These stations are closer to the falls. From there, you’ll need local transport to get to the site.

If you’d like help with arranging local transport from the station or terminal to the waterfall, I can suggest a reliable and safe option (feel free to message me directly — no obligation at all).

💡 Continuing to Banyuwangi, Ijen, or Bali?

After visiting Tumpak Sewu, many travelers continue east toward Banyuwangi, Ijen Crater, or cross over to Bali.

There are options via:

Train (from Jatiroto or Jember to Banyuwangi)

Bus (to Ketapang Ferry Port for Bali crossing)

Happy to share route ideas or timing suggestions based on your plan!
