I’m wanting to book a morning ticket from Colombo Fort to Galle for 30 July. The schedule is showing a 10:30am option but it’s not showing in reservations. Does this mean tickets are already sold out? It is showing additional trains (2:40pm and 3:50pm) but from Maradana Beliatta and Maradana Mathara respectively. I’m not sure what these names represent (different stations to Colombo fort?). Appreciate any advice to assist me in understanding so I can make a booking. Many thanks
Hi there,
Solely 2 trains per day have a reservable carriage, and those are the afternoon ones. If you would look at the map you would see they both pass Galle (and start 1 station before Fort, being Maradana). Hence for both your reservation would be valid for Fort to Galle.

Thanks so much for the timely response. Do you believe I would be safe in getting a seat on the 10:30am train (given it can’t be booked in advance)?
Yes but only when boarding Maradana. The train arrives full there from Anuradhapura but many people leave at fort, you grab a seat before those boarding at fort make a chance. Btdt. Erik
Thanks so much Erik. I’ll do as you’ve suggested.
The trains showing as starting from Maradana to Beliatta or Maradana to Matara are the same southern coastal line trains — they pass through Colombo Fort, so:
You can board at Colombo Fort, even if the schedule says “Maradana” as the starting point.
Just make sure to choose Colombo Fort as your departure station when booking.
Maradana Station is a smaller station in Colombo, about 10 minutes from Colombo Fort. Some trains start there and then stop at Fort.
Yes but #5 totally misses the point: in order to get a seat at the 10.30 Fort train, be 10 AM at Maradana (not Fort) and buy a ticket from there. The train stops 10.15 there and you probably need to stand for the few minutes to Fort...

This is the train I'd like to catch down to Galle. Can I check, no reservation needed,so when can I buy the ticket and not feel stressed about it? I'll be travelling during high season on a week day, which type of seating is available for us, we'd like some comfort if possible ke.
Edited: 5:08 am, October 25, 2025Train number 8056 (Galu Kumari) & 8058 (Ruhunu Kumari) evening trains consist with reserve able first class cabins. Comfortable & you can book 30 days ahead as other lines.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I too want to travel on the morning train to Galle. How easy is it to buy tickets during high season & when are they available to buy?
Ah, So for unreserved, there is no limitation for issuing tickets. Go to Maradana railway station and take a second class ticket to to your destination on the traveling date (30 mins before train departure time) and go to the flat form. Normally southbound trains are coming to no. 5 or 6 flat form. It will announce.
There is a fare chance to get a seat on trains when you are get in at Maradana.
