Living in Ningbo

I am going to live in Ningbo for the next 2-3 years.

If any West European lives there could please suggest me which is the best area to find an apartment?

I live in China 2 years already and I know that for a westerner to live in old Chinese districts is not affordable.

I 'd like to be western style restaurants, caffe and bars around and if possible a foreigners' community nearby.

Thanks

Ningbo is a modern and comfortable city to live in, especially for expatriates planning a longer stay. It offers a mix of local culture and international convenience, with several neighborhoods popular among Westerners and foreign professionals. Since you are looking for an area with a foreign community, western-style amenities, and good accessibility, there are several great districts to consider.

The most recommended areas for expats in Ningbo are those that combine modern housing, proximity to international schools or business hubs, and easy access to restaurants, cafés, and bars. These districts offer a balanced lifestyle that caters to both comfort and convenience.

  • Yinzhou District: This is one of the most popular residential areas for expatriates. It features modern apartment complexes, shopping malls like Wanda Plaza and Intime City, international restaurants, and fitness centers. Yinzhou also has several bilingual kindergartens and international schools nearby, making it perfect for families and professionals alike.
  • Jiangdong (Eastern New Town): Known for its high-end apartments and modern city layout, Jiangdong has many Western-style cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets catering to expats. It’s close to business areas and offers a clean, urban living environment.
  • Tianyi Square Area (Haishu District): If you prefer to live in the city center with easy access to entertainment and nightlife, this area is ideal. It’s full of restaurants, bars, and shopping centers. While apartments can be smaller and pricier here, the convenience is unmatched.
  • Dongqian Lake Area: For those who prefer a quieter, scenic lifestyle surrounded by nature, Dongqian Lake offers beautiful views and luxury villas. It’s a bit further from the city center but provides a peaceful escape from urban hustle.

These neighborhoods are well-connected by public transport and taxis, making commuting easy. In addition, you’ll find several expat-friendly amenities such as international supermarkets, Western bakeries, and fitness clubs. Many foreign professionals working in trade, manufacturing, or education reside in these areas.

For social life and networking, you can join Ningbo expat groups or visit popular bars and cafés frequented by foreigners. Areas around Tianyi Square and Yinzhou are especially known for their lively expat scenes. Some foreign residents also recommend using local WeChat groups to find housing recommendations and connect with other Westerners living in Ningbo.

  • Yinzhou: Modern apartments, shopping, international schools.
  • Jiangdong: Urban comfort, expat-friendly services, and dining options.
  • Haishu (Tianyi Square): Vibrant city center with nightlife and culture.
  • Dongqian Lake: Tranquil setting with villas and scenic surroundings.

Overall, Yinzhou District is the best all-around choice for most Western expatriates in Ningbo, offering a convenient mix of comfort, modern lifestyle, and a welcoming community of foreigners.
