Thrifty Toll Scam

Recently rented a car with Thrifty at Denver Airport. Be very careful and ask about the tolls as they are running a scam. Customer service did not mention a word that you had to opt in for "Plate Pass All Inclusive Service". Mind you, all cars are equipped with the toll tag and I am used to paying with the credit card along with my rental. Nope not with Thrifty. They dont mention, say that you declined the "All Inclusive Service" then hit you weeks later with a $15 admin charge for EACH time you used a toll. Complete BS!! Needless to say will not be using them again.

It sounds like you had a frustrating experience with Thrifty at Denver Airport regarding toll charges. What you are describing is a common issue that renters encounter when they are not fully informed about toll payment options or additional administrative fees.

Thrifty, like many car rental companies, offers a service called "PlatePass All Inclusive Service" which automatically handles tolls for you. If you opt into this service, tolls are charged to your account along with a convenience fee. However, if you decline this service, the tolls are not automatically billed, and the rental company may charge an administrative fee for processing the tolls manually after your rental.

Key points to be aware of:

  • Even though the rental car is equipped with a toll tag, you need to explicitly opt in for the "All Inclusive Service" to avoid manual processing fees.
  • If you decline the service, Thrifty may charge a separate administrative fee for each toll usage, which can be surprising if you were expecting the toll to be charged automatically to your credit card.
  • Customer service may not always proactively explain this policy, which can lead to unexpected charges weeks after the rental.

To avoid this issue in the future, consider the following steps:

  • Ask explicitly about toll payment options when renting the car, including whether you are automatically enrolled or need to opt in for any service.
  • Keep track of tolls used during your rental and compare them with any charges that appear on your statement.
  • If you do not want to pay extra fees, use cash or a personal toll account where possible, or select a rental company with a clearer toll policy.

Many renters find this administrative fee frustrating because it is not always clearly communicated at the time of rental. Being proactive and confirming the toll payment method can help prevent these unexpected charges.
