Milestone birthday adventure in Leelanau penninsula

My parents are turning 70 and 75 this summer and love Leelanau peninsula. They've vacationed there for years and done most of the main to-do's. But I'd love to find a new, more-rare adventure / experience.

Maybe in the realm of a Lake Michigan sail, helping with wine production, special tour of Manitou islands or a lighthouse.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a unique experience that may not show up on "top-10" lists?

Thanks!

Celebrating milestone birthdays on the Leelanau Peninsula offers a wonderful opportunity to combine the familiar favorites with unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences. Since your parents have already explored many of the usual attractions, here are some ideas that focus on exclusive or lesser-known adventures in the area:

For a memorable day on Lake Michigan:

  • Charter a private sailboat or schooner for a personalized cruise along the Leelanau shoreline. Some operators offer sunset sails, wine tastings on board, or even opportunities to help raise the sails for a more hands-on experience.
  • Arrange a guided tour of the Manitou Islands with a local boat operator. While most visitors see the islands from afar, a private tour can include hiking the islands’ trails, exploring hidden beaches, and learning the local history and ecology from a knowledgeable guide.
  • Book a specialized photography or bird-watching cruise, where guides focus on spotting rare wildlife and teaching tips for capturing the best views.

Wine and vineyard experiences:

  • Many wineries in Leelanau offer behind-the-scenes experiences. Look for private tastings that include a vineyard tour, barrel room visit, or a brief hands-on experience in the wine production process such as grape tasting or blending workshops.
  • Some boutique wineries offer pairing experiences with local cheeses, chocolates, or charcuterie that aren’t widely advertised, making for a unique and intimate event.
  • Consider arranging a vineyard lunch or picnic hosted at a winery, with a sommelier guiding a tasting while overlooking the vines.

Lighthouse and local history experiences:

  • Reserve a private tour of a lighthouse along the peninsula, such as the Big Sable Point or South Manitou Island Light. Some tours include climbing the lighthouse tower, exploring the keeper’s quarters, and learning the stories of the lighthouse keepers.
  • Combine a lighthouse visit with a local historian or guide who can share little-known facts, regional lore, and the maritime history of Lake Michigan.
  • For a more immersive adventure, some operators offer kayak or small-boat tours to reach lighthouses that are otherwise inaccessible to casual visitors.

Other unique experiences to consider:

  • Private art or culinary classes with local artists or chefs, focusing on Michigan-themed crafts or cuisine.
  • Helicopter or small plane tours over the peninsula for a bird’s-eye view of vineyards, Lake Michigan coastline, and charming small towns.
  • Seasonal or specialty farm experiences, such as a private cherry orchard tour (if visiting during harvest) or participation in a local farm-to-table cooking session.

By selecting one or a combination of these activities, you can create a tailored and memorable milestone celebration that highlights the beauty and uniqueness of Leelanau while offering experiences that your parents may not have tried before.
