Koloa Landing or Sheraton Poipu - 2024

Hello all, looking for some advice. I have been to Maui and Big Island several times but am going to Kauai for the first time with my wife and tween/teen kids and trying to decide between the Koloa Landing or Sheraton Properties in Poipu. I am a Marriott Titanium booking on points and hoping to get an upgrade, but know that I have to go with the assumption that I will get the room that I book. Leaning towards Koloa Landing because of the pool and the property size (more space for the kids to safely spread out) and more to do "on campus." The location of the Sheraton is obviously the better of the two, but again - I can't guarantee an oceanfront or upgrade. I know the Sheraton has has a recent facelift, but still an older hotel. Koloa Landing is a bit more in points for the entire stay (80k more) but I have a lot of points and am willing to spend them for a better vacation. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Aloha,

First off, it's great that you're planning a trip to Kauai! Both Koloa Landing and Sheraton Poipu are excellent choices, but they each offer a different experience. Here are some factors to consider when making your decision:

  • Koloa Landing:

Koloa Landing is a fantastic option if you're looking for more space and family-friendly amenities. The property is newer and offers spacious, modern rooms, which is great for a family with kids. The pool area is definitely a highlight, featuring one of the largest pools on the island, which your kids will likely enjoy. With multiple pools, hot tubs, and a lazy river, there’s plenty of space to spread out and relax. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and there are lots of activities available on the property, making it perfect for a family vacation. Koloa Landing also offers a more “resort-style” experience with easy access to on-site dining, a fitness center, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The downside is that while the property is lovely, it's not directly on the beach. The beach access is a bit of a walk, and the beach is not as ideal for swimming compared to others in the area. However, the property does offer a free shuttle to nearby beaches, so it's not a major issue if you don’t mind a short ride. The resort also tends to be a little more expensive in terms of points, but with your large Marriott point balance, it sounds like it could be a good option for you.

  • Sheraton Poipu:

Sheraton Poipu, on the other hand, is all about location. It's right on Poipu Beach, one of the best beaches on Kauai for swimming, snorkeling, and just soaking up the sun. The beach access is unbeatable, which makes it an excellent option if being close to the water is a priority. The hotel recently underwent renovations, so it has a more updated look compared to the older rooms, though it still has that older resort feel in terms of the building and layout.

Since you're a Marriott Titanium member, you might be able to score an upgrade, but as you mentioned, it’s not guaranteed. However, the Sheraton’s location right on the beach might make up for it. The pool area here is also nice, but it’s smaller compared to Koloa Landing. There’s a bit less space for kids to spread out compared to Koloa Landing, but the proximity to the beach may make it worth it.

In terms of amenities and activities:

  • Koloa Landing is more focused on resort-style activities and poolside fun, making it a great option for families who want to spend a lot of time on the property.
  • Sheraton Poipu offers easy beach access and a more traditional hotel experience with beachfront views, making it a great choice if you're planning to spend a lot of time at the beach.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more in points for the larger space, more activities, and a more "sprawling" feel, Koloa Landing would be a great choice. On the other hand, if being close to the beach is your top priority and you don't mind the older property feel, Sheraton Poipu might be the better pick. Both have their strengths, so it really comes down to what you value more—beachfront access and location, or more amenities and space for your family.

Both properties are great choices, but I hope this breakdown helps you make the best decision for your family. Have a wonderful trip!
