Shuttle Schedules on Weekends

We'd like to watch the sunrise from Moro Rock on Saturday morning. Since the roads are closed to private vehicles, we'd need to take a shuttle, or hike. Does anyone know if the shuttles run for sunrise on weekends?

Visiting Moro Rock for sunrise is a spectacular experience, but it does require some planning due to access restrictions. The road leading to Moro Rock is closed to private vehicles, so visitors must either hike up the road or use the park shuttle service.

Shuttle Availability:

During peak season, including weekends, the National Park Service operates the Sequoia & Kings Canyon shuttle system. However, shuttle service typically starts around 9:00 AM and runs until late afternoon. Early morning trips specifically for sunrise are generally not part of the standard shuttle schedule.

  • Shuttles do not usually run early enough for sunrise departures, especially on weekends.
  • Check the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park shuttle map and schedules online prior to your visit, as seasonal updates can adjust times slightly.

Alternative Options:

  • Hiking: You can hike up from the Crescent Meadow or the Giant Forest parking areas before sunrise. The Moro Rock Trail is steep but short, about 0.25 miles one way, and should take roughly 15–20 minutes.
  • Private Arrangements: If staying at nearby accommodations, you could inquire whether any guided tours or private transportation options are available early in the morning.

Recommendation: For a sunrise experience at Moro Rock, plan to hike up on your own, carrying a flashlight or headlamp for safety. Arriving early allows you to enjoy the view before the crowds and before the shuttle service begins.
