Any advice about KBM rentals for condo and car?

In recent years we have rented directly from an owner who lives near us her in the Bay Area, but his property isn't available for our rather last minute trip this year in October, so considering a Kapalua Bay Villa through KBM. We haven't used them before. I notice they charge a "resort fee" of over $400, which I haven't seen before through an agency representing privately owned condos. They also offer a free rental car, a Chrysler 200, or equivalent, which is a midsize, I think. Does anyone have any input on the rental agency for accommodations, or renting a car through them? It's been a rough few months for Maui and for us, so we can't wait to return to Maui. It's good to see lots of familiar names appearing in the forum. Thanks for any insights or advice.

It’s great that you're planning your return to Maui, and I completely understand your need for some solid advice when considering a new rental agency like KBM. Renting a condo through KBM can be a good option, but there are a few things to consider when booking through them, especially with the additional resort fee and rental car offer. Here’s some feedback based on other travelers' experiences with KBM and general advice for booking a condo and car rental in Maui:

  • Resort Fee: The resort fee of $400 you mentioned is certainly higher than what you might see with privately owned condos rented directly, but it’s not uncommon for properties managed by agencies or larger resorts to charge these types of fees. This fee often covers amenities like Wi-Fi, parking, resort access, and cleaning services. However, it's a good idea to inquire directly with KBM about exactly what is covered in the resort fee to ensure you're comfortable with the services provided.
  • Rental Car: The free rental car (Chrysler 200 or equivalent) is a nice perk, especially since car rentals in Maui can be expensive and hard to find, especially during peak seasons. While the Chrysler 200 is a midsize sedan, it's certainly fine for getting around the island. However, keep in mind that some visitors prefer a larger SUV or something more off-road capable for exploring areas like Hana or driving up to Haleakalā. If you think you might need a larger vehicle, it's worth checking with KBM to see if you can upgrade the car or if there are alternative rental options available.
  • Condo Quality: KBM Rentals manages many high-end condos and villas in Kapalua Bay, which are known for being well-maintained and located in desirable areas. If you’re familiar with Kapalua Bay and its amenities, you're likely to enjoy your stay. However, as with any rental agency, it’s important to check recent guest reviews for any specific properties you’re considering. Some travelers have shared that while the condos are lovely, the experience can vary depending on the specific unit, as some owners may update their properties more frequently than others.
  • Customer Service: KBM generally gets positive reviews for their customer service. In the event of any issues during your stay, their team is responsive and can assist with maintenance problems, bookings, and special requests. Still, it's a good idea to reach out to them directly with any specific questions you may have about your booking, like early check-in or late check-out options, parking details, and the exact amenities included in the resort fee.
  • Location: Kapalua Bay is a beautiful area with easy access to beaches, hiking, and dining. It’s quieter than areas like Lahaina or Kaanapali, which some people love for its more peaceful atmosphere. If you’re looking to be close to the bustling action of Lahaina or other popular areas, you may want to rent a car to make sure you're easily able to explore. But overall, Kapalua is a great spot for a relaxing getaway with stunning views.

Overall, if you are comfortable with the resort fee and car rental offer, KBM can be a good option, especially if you like the Kapalua Bay area. The free rental car is a great perk, and the condo options are generally upscale. However, make sure to clarify what the resort fee covers and confirm the exact type of car you’ll receive to avoid any surprises. Also, if you’re planning on exploring a lot or need a specific vehicle type, consider upgrading the rental car beforehand.

I hope this helps, and I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time in Maui! It's great to hear that you’re returning after everything Maui has been through. Enjoy your trip!
