recommended crossing from DTW into Canada

Can anyone advise on the best crossing point into Canada after leaving from the Detroit airport? I'll be getting a rental car at the airport, with a destination of Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario.

By "best" crossing, I think I mean the fastest, but if the time difference isn't much and the slower one is easier, I would be interested in that.

I've never flown into DTW. I had originally planned to fly into Toronto, but the cost was so high that flying into Detroit was an incredible savings.

Thanks so much for any feedback.

Flying into Detroit (DTW) and driving into Canada to reach Kitchener-Waterloo is a common route, and there are a few options for crossing the border. Your choice will depend on traffic, ease of crossing, and your comfort level with larger bridges versus smaller ports of entry.

1. Major crossing options:

  • Ambassador Bridge (Detroit → Windsor): This is the most direct and commonly used crossing from Detroit to Windsor. From DTW, you’ll drive approximately 25–30 minutes to reach the bridge. It connects directly into downtown Windsor, from where you can continue on Highway 401 east towards Kitchener-Waterloo. This route is usually the fastest and most straightforward, but it can experience heavy commercial truck traffic during peak hours.
  • Detroit-Windsor Tunnel: Slightly shorter than the bridge for passenger vehicles, this tunnel also connects downtown Detroit to Windsor. It can be less busy than the bridge at times, especially with commercial traffic restrictions. There are tolls, and during peak travel times, there may still be a line, but it is generally a smooth crossing.
  • Blue Water Bridge (Port Huron → Sarnia): About 1.5 hours northeast of DTW, this crossing avoids Detroit traffic but requires a longer drive from the airport. It tends to have lighter traffic and can be easier for some drivers who prefer a more relaxed crossing experience. From Sarnia, you would take Highway 402 east to connect to 401 towards Kitchener-Waterloo.

2. Recommended approach:

  • If your priority is the fastest route and minimal extra driving, the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is your best choice. Both are roughly 25–30 minutes from DTW and lead directly onto major highways to Ontario.
  • If you prefer to avoid possible commercial truck congestion or want a slightly easier drive, the Blue Water Bridge is a good alternative, but it will add extra time to your overall drive.

3. Tips for crossing:

  • Have your passports ready and ensure any rental car documentation allows for cross-border travel.
  • Check live border wait times online before departure. The Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge websites provide current wait information, which can help you decide at the time of travel.
  • Use NEXUS or other trusted traveler programs if you are enrolled; this can speed up the crossing considerably.
  • Avoid peak morning and late afternoon rush hours if possible, especially on weekdays, as commercial traffic can back up both the bridge and tunnel.

Overall, for a first-time traveler from DTW heading to Kitchener-Waterloo, the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will likely provide the fastest and most convenient crossing. Blue Water Bridge is a viable alternative if you want a slightly calmer experience and don’t mind a bit more driving.
