Gift “experiences”
My son lives in a NW Detroit suburb, with children ages 10, almost 8 and almost 3. I am looking for gift suggestions for them for Christmas in the form of an experience. I could do a membership to the Detroit Zoo, but am wondering about other options (indoor or outdoor) that the whole family could enjoy together within an hour’s drive. I do not live there so don’t know where to begin to look!
Giving experiences as gifts is a fantastic way to create lasting memories, especially for families with young children. Detroit and its surrounding areas offer many options within about an hour’s drive that cater to a wide range of ages and interests, both indoors and outdoors.
Outdoor and Nature Experiences:
- Detroit Zoo Membership: A classic choice. The zoo is especially fun in spring and summer, but even in winter, the indoor exhibits (like the Arctic Ring of Life and Tropical Rainforest) make it a year-round experience.
- Belle Isle Park: Membership or passes to attractions on Belle Isle, such as the Belle Isle Aquarium, Belle Isle Nature Center, and Dossin Great Lakes Museum. The island has playgrounds and walking trails for all ages.
- Outdoor Adventure Centers: Places like Kensington Metropark and Stony Creek Metropark offer family-friendly hiking, picnicking, and winter activities like sledding or cross-country skiing, which could be packaged as a seasonal experience gift.
Indoor Educational and Play Experiences:
- Michigan Science Center: Memberships or day passes are ideal for children ages 3–10. Hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, and the IMAX theater make it engaging for multiple ages at once.
- LEGOLAND Discovery Center (Auburn Hills): A short drive from NW Detroit suburbs, it offers building activities, rides, and play zones for children roughly 3–12 years old.
- SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium: Also in Auburn Hills near LEGOLAND, can be combined for a full-day experience exploring aquatic life.
- Indoor Trampoline or Play Centers: Places like Sky Zone Trampoline Park or local indoor play gyms offer active fun for all children, especially the youngest, and can be a gift that encourages movement during winter months.
Cultural and Seasonal Experiences:
- Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA): Family memberships offer access to kid-friendly tours, family art activities, and special exhibitions that appeal to a range of ages.
- Holiday or Seasonal Shows: Tickets to performances such as the Christmas show at the Fox Theatre, local children’s theater productions, or seasonal puppet shows can be a memorable gift.
- Detroit Historical Museum or Motown Museum: For families with older children, museum memberships or passes can provide an engaging cultural experience.
When choosing an experience gift, consider the ages of the children and whether the experience allows participation for all three. Combining memberships or passes (for example, a zoo + Belle Isle experience) can give the family multiple outings over the year, making it a gift that keeps giving beyond the holidays.
