Lahaina harbor/surfing
Hi all. We are headed to Maui on a last minute trip. We will stay in Kaanapali area. My husband surfs and usually surfs in Lahaina area. Anyone know if that area is open to parking and surfing? Thanks!
Hi! It’s great that you’re heading to Maui for your trip! Lahaina is a popular area for surfers, and it offers several spots for surfing as well as some parking options. Here's what you need to know:
- Surfing in Lahaina: The Lahaina area, especially near the harbor and Front Street, has some good surf spots. While there aren’t as many world-famous breaks like in other parts of the island, there are still plenty of waves for both beginner and intermediate surfers. Popular spots in the area include "Lahaina Harbor" which has consistent waves, and "Launiupoko Beach Park" just a little to the south, which offers a mellow reef break ideal for both longboarders and shortboarders.
- Parking around Lahaina Harbor: There is parking available near Lahaina Harbor, but it can get crowded, especially during peak hours or when cruise ships are in port. There’s limited street parking, and some paid lots nearby that you can use. It's a good idea to arrive early to grab a spot, or you may need to walk a bit to the surf spot from where you park.
- Alternative Surfing Spots in Lahaina: If you're looking for a less crowded place to surf, you could check out the breaks at "Launiupoko" (which has a small parking lot with a great view of the waves) or "Kaanapali Beach," which is just a short drive from Lahaina if you’re staying in the Kaanapali area. These spots are known for their beautiful conditions and smaller crowds compared to the busy harbor area.
Overall, Lahaina is definitely open for surfing, and while parking can be tricky, it’s manageable if you’re flexible and arrive early. Enjoy the waves, and have a great time on Maui!
