Kansas City history

My husband and I are visiting Kansas City in April. We would love to learn more about the history of Kansas City relative to the US westward expansion. This tour could be part of a museum or with a walking group. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thanks!

Kansas City has a rich history tied to the westward expansion, and there are several places where you can explore that history in depth. Here are a few suggestions for historical sites, tours, and museums that you might find interesting during your visit:

  • The National Frontier Trails Museum: Located in Independence, Missouri, this museum is dedicated to the stories of the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails. It offers exhibits that explore the westward expansion, including the challenges faced by pioneers and the role Kansas City played as a key starting point for many of these trails. It's a fantastic place to start learning about the movement westward.
  • Westport Historic District: Westport was a key point for pioneers heading west, and it was also a major trading post and supply stop during the 1800s. The area has preserved many historic buildings, and you can take a self-guided walking tour or join a local guided tour to learn about its role in Kansas City's history and the westward expansion. There are also great places to eat and shop in the district, so it's worth exploring for both history and fun.
  • The Missouri River: Kansas City's location along the Missouri River was crucial to the expansion westward. A visit to the riverfront area or a riverboat cruise can provide historical context on the river's importance to trade and settlement. Some guided tours along the river include historical narratives about the river’s role in the westward expansion.
  • The Kansas City Museum: Located in the historic Corinthian Hall in Kansas City, this museum offers exhibits on local history, and while it covers a broad range of topics, it touches on the history of westward expansion, including the role of Kansas City as a transportation and trade hub. The museum is currently undergoing renovations, but it may still offer some exhibits or temporary displays related to the city's past.
  • Walking Tours of Downtown Kansas City: There are guided walking tours that focus on different aspects of the city's history, including its role in the westward expansion. These tours are often led by local historians and can provide insights into the architecture, landmarks, and history of the area. Some tours even focus specifically on the Westward Expansion and the role Kansas City played as a jumping-off point for settlers heading west.

Kansas City is a great city for history lovers, and there are many ways to connect with its rich past, particularly regarding the westward expansion. You might also want to check out the Visitor Center for more up-to-date recommendations on tours available during your visit!
