Ontario or michigan overnight stay

Gonna be in the Soo 1 night 9/16. Should we stay in US or Cansda side? Looking for a downtown area, bars restaurants, nice lodging.

For a one-night stay in Sault Ste. Marie on 9/16, both the U.S. and Canadian sides have their merits, but your choice will depend on the type of experience you want, ease of access, and whether you prefer U.S. or Canadian amenities.

U.S. Side (Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan):

The downtown area is compact, walkable, and has easy access to bars, restaurants, and attractions. It’s convenient if you’re driving or prefer to avoid border crossing delays. The U.S. side has a more traditional American downtown feel with riverfront views.

  • Lodging: Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront – riverfront location, modern rooms, easy walking access to downtown.
  • Restaurants/Bars: The Waterstreet Tavern – casual dining with local beers; Antlers Restaurant & Bar – classic American cuisine; BrewWorks – local microbrewery with pub fare.
  • Activities: Walk along the Soo Locks viewing area; Riverfront Boardwalk; local shops and boutiques.

Canadian Side (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario):

The Canadian downtown is also compact and has a charming small-city vibe with a few more options for nightlife and restaurants in a pedestrian-friendly area. It can feel slightly busier and more cosmopolitan than the U.S. side.

  • Lodging: Quattro Hotel & Conf. Centre – modern, centrally located; Delta Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront (Ontario side) – upscale, riverfront views, close to bars and restaurants.
  • Restaurants/Bars: The Mill Steakhouse – upscale dining; Malicosta Kitchen + Bar – contemporary Canadian cuisine; Out Back Bar & Grill – casual drinks and pub food.
  • Activities: Walk along the St. Marys River waterfront; downtown boutiques; local galleries and small museums.

Other Considerations:

  • Border crossing: If you stay on the Canadian side, you’ll need a passport or enhanced ID and allow time for U.S./Canada border crossing when leaving or arriving.
  • Walkability: Both downtown areas are walkable, but the Canadian side may have a slightly denser cluster of bars/restaurants for a short stay.
  • Vibe: U.S. side offers a classic small American city feel; Canadian side can feel a touch more cosmopolitan and slightly quieter in terms of traffic.

Recommendation: If you prioritize convenience, minimal hassle, and easy walking access, the U.S. side is ideal. If you want a slightly more “international” feel with Canadian charm and don’t mind the border crossing, consider the Canadian side. Both provide good options for one night with downtown lodging, bars, and restaurants within walking distance.
