October 13-16 too late?

We had a trip planned to Asheville in two weeks...so sad what has happened there. Mackinac Island is next up on our list, but I'm wondering if it's too late in the season.

I see that the Grand Hotel is much cheaper at that time, so we'd probably spend 3 nights there and the rest of the trip exploring the western shoreline back south.

How much of the island will be closed by that time? Horse and carriages still operating? Bicycle rentals available, etc.?

Visiting Mackinac Island in mid-October, specifically October 13-16, is considered late in the season, but it can still be a very enjoyable time if you are prepared for a quieter experience. Most of the peak summer crowds have left, which makes for a peaceful visit and often lower prices, including at the Grand Hotel.

However, some seasonal businesses and attractions begin to close by mid-October. The exact closures vary year by year, but you can generally expect the following:

  • Many shops and restaurants on Main Street will be open, but some may have reduced hours or be closed for the season.
  • The Grand Hotel is open, and staying there is a great way to enjoy the island with fewer crowds.
  • Horse-drawn carriage tours typically continue into October, but you should check with specific operators for availability and make reservations in advance.
  • Bicycle rentals are usually still available, and biking remains the best way to explore the island extensively. Some rental shops may close mid-October, so it’s a good idea to confirm ahead.
  • Most historical sites, including Fort Mackinac, remain open, although some special events or programming may have ended for the season.

Additional tips for visiting in mid-October:

  • Dress in layers as temperatures can be cooler and more variable than in summer.
  • Expect fewer ferries and services, so plan your arrival and departure times accordingly.
  • Book any tours, carriage rides, or bike rentals in advance to ensure availability.
  • Enjoy the autumn scenery, which can be spectacular, especially on the island’s trails and along the shoreline.

Overall, while it is later in the season and some attractions may have limited hours, mid-October offers a quieter, more relaxed experience on Mackinac Island with still plenty to see and do. Horse carriages and bicycle rentals are generally still operating, but early planning is key to ensure you can enjoy everything you want.
