Aurora sighting in Mohe

May I know if it is possible to see the Aurora in Mohe other than winter months? I was told by my friend who had been to Mohe in Jan25 but unable to witness any. Thank you.

Mohe County, located in the far north of Heilongjiang province, is the northernmost point of China and is famous for its aurora borealis sightings. However, the aurora is primarily visible during the winter months, when nights are long and skies are dark. Winter is typically considered November through February, with peak visibility in December and January.

During late spring, such as May, it becomes very difficult to see the aurora in Mohe for several reasons:

  • Daylight hours are very long; Mohe experiences nearly 20 hours of daylight in May, leaving very little darkness for aurora observation.
  • Weather conditions in spring are less predictable, and cloud cover can obscure the sky.
  • The aurora activity itself is still present, but without sufficiently dark skies, it is almost impossible to observe with the naked eye.

For anyone hoping to see the aurora in Mohe, the practical advice is:

  • Plan your trip between November and February for the best chance of witnessing the Northern Lights.
  • Stay outside the main town lights, in more remote areas, to avoid light pollution.
  • Check local aurora forecasts and weather conditions to optimize viewing chances.

In summary, May is not suitable for aurora sightings in Mohe. While the aurora is technically present year-round, the extremely long daylight hours make observation impossible outside the winter months.
