Town to stay in near Grand Rapids

Coming to Grand Rapids for business, w/spouse. Thinking of staying near the city rather than in it. Any suggestions for “nice” towns (not economically depressed, some good walkability and range of accommodation/food) within even an hour of Grand Rapids?

We don’t know the area at all so a recommendation would be appreciated.

If you’re visiting Grand Rapids for business but prefer staying outside the city, there are several towns and suburban areas within about an hour that offer nice accommodations, walkable neighborhoods, and good dining options. Michigan’s west side has a mix of suburban charm and small-town character, so you can find a comfortable base while still being close to downtown Grand Rapids for work or events.

Top towns/suburbs to consider:

  • East Grand Rapids — Just a few minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, this affluent suburb offers tree-lined streets, boutique shops, and excellent dining options. It’s walkable in parts, particularly near Wealthy Street, and has a mix of chain and boutique hotels nearby.
  • Wyoming — A large suburb south of Grand Rapids with convenient access to highways and shopping centers. Not as quaint as East Grand Rapids but has newer hotels and restaurants, making it practical for business stays.
  • Grandville — About 15–20 minutes southwest of downtown Grand Rapids. Offers a quieter suburban feel with big-box shopping, some local restaurants, and mid-range hotels. Walkability is moderate but good for short outings.
  • Caledonia — Around 15–20 minutes southeast of Grand Rapids. This is more rural-suburban, with a small-town feel and local eateries. A nice option if you prefer a quieter, scenic stay. Limited hotels, so planning ahead is key.
  • Holland — About 30 minutes west of Grand Rapids toward Lake Michigan. A charming town with Dutch heritage, a walkable downtown area with boutique shops, dining, and breweries. Great if you want a combination of small-town character and good amenities, though slightly further for daily commuting.
  • Grand Haven — About 45 minutes northwest, right on Lake Michigan. More of a resort/summer town but very charming, with a walkable downtown, beach access, and dining options. Best if you want a scenic stay near the lake, though farther from the city center for daily business commuting.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Traffic is generally manageable within an hour of Grand Rapids, though morning and late-afternoon commutes can add time.
  • East Grand Rapids and Grandville are the most convenient for daily downtown access.
  • Holland and Grand Haven are excellent if you plan to enjoy leisure time exploring shops, lakes, and small-town charm.
  • All these areas have a range of accommodations from boutique inns to chain hotels, so you can find something that fits your style and budget.

Overall, if your priority is convenience for business with some walkable charm, East Grand Rapids is likely your best bet. For a quieter, scenic stay with more character, Holland or Grand Haven provide a great experience and are still within about an hour of Grand Rapids.
