Lanikai Feb/March/April

Hello all, my family (5yr, 3yr and 1yr) along with a grandma are considering doing a month in Lanikai, as its the last year to do an extended stay before our daughter starts school...with this in mind, we are thinking of staying in Lanikai as my wife loves the beach there and we also like the lack of waves (typically) for the little ones, as well as Kailua town in general. We have been to Kailua/Lanikai in combination with staying elsewhere on the island (Paradise Bay, Turtle Bay, and in Waikiki) in April and September, but never in winter, and never for an extended period. My question would be is there a big difference (sun/overcast/rain/ocean conditions) between Feb, March and April? We will be ok to do a day trip from time to time to Waikiki but do not want to have to chase the sun a majority of the trip. Is April our best bet for decent weather or is that even a bad choice?

It sounds like a wonderful plan to spend a month in Lanikai, especially with young kids. Lanikai's calm beach is perfect for little ones, and Kailua's small-town charm is a lovely setting for an extended stay. As for your question about the weather in February, March, and April, here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Weather Overview:

Oahu’s weather in winter months (December through February) can be a bit more unpredictable, with higher chances of rain and overcast skies, especially on the windward side, which includes Lanikai and Kailua. By March and April, the weather tends to improve significantly as Hawaii transitions into spring. Here’s a more detailed look:

  • February: February is generally one of the rainier months in Hawaii. You can expect occasional overcast days, higher chances of rain, and cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings. While Lanikai and Kailua are relatively sheltered from the strong waves that affect other parts of the island, you may still see some unpredictable conditions. It’s best to be prepared for some rainy days, although the rain is usually brief.
  • March: March marks the transition into drier weather, but it’s still a bit variable. The rain starts to lessen, and you’ll see more sunshine, although some days may still be overcast. Ocean conditions will generally be calm on the windward side, but there could still be some lingering rain showers. This is a good time for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring, as well as trips to nearby beaches.
  • April: April is typically the driest of the three months you’re considering. By now, Hawaii’s weather is much more consistent, with sunny days and pleasant temperatures. The ocean conditions will be calm, making it ideal for beach days with young children. There may still be an occasional light shower, but the chances of extended rain are much lower. April is definitely one of the best months for weather on Oahu, especially if you want to avoid the wet and cooler conditions of winter.

Best Choice for Weather:

Given your desire to avoid chasing the sun and ensure good weather for the majority of your trip, April is likely your best bet for optimal weather. The conditions are typically sunny with fewer rain showers, and the ocean is calm. The spring weather will allow you to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and snorkeling without the unpredictability of winter rain.

Other Considerations:

  • Sunshine & Rain: February and March can still bring some overcast days, and while April is typically sunny, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast just in case. The windward side of Oahu (including Lanikai) tends to have more rain than other parts of the island, so it’s not uncommon to experience occasional showers, but they usually don’t last long.
  • Waves & Ocean Conditions: For young kids, the lack of big waves at Lanikai is a huge plus. You’ll likely see calmer waters in April, although it’s always a good idea to check the ocean conditions before heading out, as conditions can vary.

Conclusion:

  • February: More rain and overcast skies, cooler temperatures.
  • March: Transitioning to drier weather, but still some rain.
  • April: Best bet for sunny, pleasant weather and calm ocean conditions.

So, for the best weather and a relaxing stay with your family, I’d recommend planning your trip for April. The weather will likely be more consistent, and you’ll have plenty of sunny days to enjoy Lanikai and other nearby attractions.
