Favorite hikes VOF

We’re planning a good 6 hours in VOF, as we’re spending night prior in Moapa, then driving south. The Lost City museum is closed Mondays - is there any other place of interest on our way south to park entrance?

Thanks, looking forward to this!

Valley of Fire State Park (VOF) is a fantastic destination for a half-day visit, especially if you have about six hours to spend. The park is known for its stunning red sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and scenic hiking trails, many of which can be completed in an hour or less. Since you’ll be driving south from Moapa, there are a few interesting stops along the way, especially since the Lost City Museum is closed on Mondays.

Hiking and park highlights to consider within VOF:

  • Mouse’s Tank Trail: A short, easy hike (about 0.75 miles round-trip) that leads to a rock basin that holds water after rains, and features ancient petroglyphs. Very accessible for most visitors.
  • Fire Wave Trail: A 1.5-mile round-trip hike to see the iconic swirling red-and-white sandstone formations. Moderate difficulty but well worth it for photos.
  • White Domes Trail: About 1.25 miles round-trip, this trail features slot canyons, rock formations, and an old movie set site. Moderate difficulty with a bit of scrambling.
  • Elephant Rock: A quick and easy stop for photos, just a short walk from the parking area. Great if your time is limited.

Other stops along the route south from Moapa toward Valley of Fire:

  • Overton Beach and Lake Mead Overlook: If you want a quick detour, Lake Mead is visible near Overton, with scenic views and picnic areas. Good for a brief stop to stretch your legs.
  • Petroglyph Canyon at Echo Bay: A bit farther out and may require more driving, but offers additional ancient rock art if you’re interested in cultural history.
  • Historic Railroad Sites in Moapa or Logandale: Small roadside stops with historic remnants of old rail or mining operations can be interesting if you like a quick historical detour.

Tips for visiting Valley of Fire:

  • Arrive early or mid-morning to avoid the peak sun and have cooler temperatures for hiking, even in cooler months.
  • Carry water, sunscreen, and a hat; shade is limited along most trails.
  • Allow some extra time for photography stops and short hikes; the park is very scenic and easy to spend more than anticipated exploring.

In summary, with six hours in VOF, prioritize a mix of short hikes like Mouse’s Tank, Fire Wave, and White Domes, along with scenic viewpoints like Elephant Rock. On the drive from Moapa, consider quick detours to Lake Mead overlooks or small historic sites for added interest, especially since the Lost City Museum won’t be open.
