February Trip
Me and my husband plan to visit Whitefish in mid February. We are travelling from Calgary .
1.Any advice for the routes we should take?
2.I read that snow could happen and not. If it does, is it safe road ?
Thanks
Driving from Calgary, Alberta to Whitefish, Montana in mid-February can be a scenic and enjoyable trip, but winter conditions require careful planning. The drive is approximately 4–5 hours under normal conditions, but snow and ice can affect travel times.
Route options:
- Primary route via US-93 South: From Calgary, take AB-2 South toward the US border at Carway, cross into the US at Piegan/Carway, then continue on US-89 South to US-2 West toward Whitefish. This is the most direct route and goes through scenic areas near Glacier National Park.
- Alternate route via US-2 East from Kalispell: You could take US-2 East from the border, but this is slightly longer and less direct than the US-93 route. This may be an option if road conditions on US-93 are poor.
Winter driving considerations:
- Snow is possible in February, particularly in the mountainous areas near the border and around Glacier National Park. Roads are generally maintained, but icy patches and reduced visibility can occur.
- US-93 and US-2 are major highways and are plowed regularly, but it’s essential to check road conditions before you travel. Websites like the Montana Department of Transportation provide real-time updates.
- All-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, especially if snow is forecasted. Carry chains or have tires suitable for winter driving.
- Weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so allow extra travel time and be prepared with emergency supplies including blankets, water, and snacks.
Tips for a safer trip:
- Check border wait times and travel restrictions, especially during winter storms.
- Start early in the day to avoid driving in darkness during potentially icy conditions.
- Keep a full tank of gas, as gas stations are less frequent in rural areas.
- Monitor local weather forecasts daily leading up to your trip.
In summary, the most straightforward and scenic route is via US-93 South from Calgary through the border and down to Whitefish. Roads are generally safe if snow occurs, provided you drive cautiously, use a suitable vehicle, and check conditions in advance. Mid-February can be snowy, but with preparation, the drive is manageable and rewarding.
