Family Friendly Resort
Hello local experts,
I'm seaching for a resort to take my 3 genation family. We'll need accomodations for 6 families. There are many to choose from, and the filters don't help with what I'm looking for.
It's the vibe, good old fashioned fun at the lake. No pools, no water slides...just swimming in that beautiful lake water.
There used to be a resort called Kirkwood Lodge that offered square dancing, but that is gone now. Any other resorts offer square dancing/
We also would enjoy boat rentals, water skiing lessons for the little ones, horsebacking riding, ice scream shop,
Any tips you can trovide will be appreciated. Thanks
ps....I see the reccomendations for Table Rock....but that is further for us to trave.
For a family-friendly resort at Lake of the Ozarks that provides a classic "lake fun" experience, here are a few recommendations that might fit what you’re looking for:
1. Lake of the Ozarks State Park – Ozark Caverns Campground and Resort
- Vibe: This resort offers a more natural, laid-back experience without the modern amenities like pools or water slides. It focuses on outdoor activities, including swimming in the lake and exploring the state park's hiking trails.
- Activities: You can enjoy lake swimming, fishing, and boating. While they don't offer square dancing, they do have seasonal events like nature programs and ranger-led activities. There are boat rentals available for family fun on the water, and they provide easy access to various recreational areas around the lake.
- Accommodation: They offer a range of accommodations including cabins, campgrounds, and family suites.
2. Big Surf Waterpark and Resort
- Vibe: While primarily known for water activities, Big Surf also emphasizes a classic family-friendly vibe without overwhelming modern amusements. The area surrounding the park has plenty of spots for lakeside swimming, and they offer a more traditional lake experience.
- Activities: They offer boat rentals, and although they don't have horseback riding, they do have a full-service marina and opportunities for water sports like water skiing. They also have a small on-site ice cream shop, perfect for the family after a day of adventure.
- Accommodation: Their resort offers cottages and larger family suites that would accommodate multiple families, perfect for a multi-generational trip.
3. Shady Gators Resort & Restaurant
- Vibe: While it’s known for its lively atmosphere, Shady Gators offers family-friendly experiences during the day, especially if you're looking for a more relaxed vibe at night.
- Activities: The resort is located right on the lake and offers boat rentals, jet skiing, and plenty of space for swimming. While they don’t specifically have square dancing, they often host live music and other family-friendly events.
- Accommodation: They offer cabins and larger homes for rent, which could accommodate your group of families.
4. Old Kinderhook Resort
- Vibe: Old Kinderhook is another great resort in the area that offers a more traditional experience. It’s quieter and focuses on lake activities, offering a calm, family-friendly atmosphere perfect for a multi-generational trip.
- Activities: They offer boat rentals and water sports like water skiing. They also feature hiking trails, but horseback riding is not available on-site. You can enjoy the lake and even rent pontoon boats for an afternoon of relaxing on the water. They have seasonal events as well, and while square dancing isn't a regular offering, they do host events that cater to families.
- Accommodation: They have a variety of accommodations, from cabins to larger homes, so it would be ideal for a group stay.
5. Tan-Tar-A Resort
- Vibe: Known for being a great family destination, Tan-Tar-A offers a more traditional resort experience with the added bonus of lake access and outdoor fun.
- Activities: They offer boat rentals, water skiing lessons, and plenty of family-friendly activities. They also feature an ice cream shop and offer a range of seasonal events. While square dancing is not a regular activity, they sometimes host themed nights and entertainment, including live bands and events perfect for families.
- Accommodation: They offer larger accommodations with multiple bedrooms, which is great for a group trip. The resort also has easy access to the lake and offers a mix of lakefront cabins and rooms.
General Tips:
- Since you’re avoiding modern water park activities, focusing on resorts that emphasize outdoor and lake-based activities is key. These resorts are perfect for families who want to connect with nature, go boating, and enjoy the lake.
- If square dancing is a must, it might be worth checking with the resort directly to see if they can host or organize an event for your group during your stay. You could also inquire with local event centers in the area that might still host square dances or country music nights.
- For horseback riding, be sure to call ahead, as not all resorts offer this service. You can also find local ranches or equestrian centers around the lake that might offer rides for the family.
With these options, you should be able to find the perfect resort to suit your family’s needs for a fun, traditional lake getaway. Have a great trip!
