Dining Discounts
Like everyone else, I'm always looking for ways to save a few bucks.
Last year, I discovered an app called In Kind. You load credit and it gives you all sorts of discounts plus cash back. If you are a Costco member they frequently sell $100 online discounted to $69.99 or less.
The app can be used in several cities and we have used it in Chicago, Naples, and Detroit.
On Maui, both Gather and Hali'imaile General Store accept In Kind.
What are other ideas besides Happy Hours? Does anyone know which local gift cards Costco sells?
It's great that you're looking for ways to save while dining on Maui! The In Kind app is a fantastic resource, and there are certainly other ways to save money on meals and experiences, aside from just happy hours. Here are a few more ideas and tips for getting discounts or deals while dining on Maui, as well as information about Costco's local gift cards:
A. In Kind App Deals
As you mentioned, In Kind is a great app for discounts and cashback. It’s accepted at places like Gather and Hali'imaile General Store on Maui, and it works well for frequent diners who want to save while trying new places. Be sure to check the app before heading out, as it regularly updates with new offers, especially in popular areas like Wailea and Lahaina. If you're planning to visit any new restaurants or local favorites, it's worth seeing if they participate in the In Kind program.
B. Costco Gift Cards
Costco on Maui also offers a variety of discounted gift cards for national and local businesses. While specific stock can vary, here are some types of gift cards you might find at Costco:
- Restaurant Gift Cards – You may find discounted gift cards for popular national restaurants (like Outback Steakhouse or The Cheesecake Factory), as well as local spots in Hawaii (such as the famous Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. or other chains).
- Retail Gift Cards – Gift cards for retail stores such as Amazon, Target, and Home Depot are common. These can be useful if you need to purchase supplies or souvenirs on the island.
- Travel Gift Cards – Costco also offers discounted travel-related gift cards, including those for Airbnb, Hotels.com, or gas station cards, which can help you save during your trip.
C. Local Maui Dining Discounts
In addition to In Kind and Costco gift cards, there are several other ways to save on dining around Maui:
- Dining Cards – Many local restaurants on Maui offer dining discount cards, especially if you book reservations in advance. For example, you can often find deals through local hotel concierge services or tourism agencies offering discounts to popular spots like Mama's Fish House, Lahaina Grill, or Dukes Beach House.
- Restaurant Week – Check to see if Maui participates in any annual "Restaurant Week" events, where participating restaurants offer prix-fixe menus at a discount. This is a great way to enjoy high-end dining at a more affordable price.
- Local Coupons and Websites – Websites like Hawaii Discount or GoHawaii sometimes offer special dining promotions, including coupons for local eateries. These can be great resources for budget-conscious travelers looking to try something new.
- Food Trucks – Maui has some fantastic food trucks that offer delicious local eats at a much more affordable price than sit-down restaurants. You can often find them at beach parks, near tourist spots, or in areas like Lahaina and Kihei.
D. More Ways to Save
Aside from In Kind and gift cards, consider the following options to maximize savings on meals:
- Breakfast Deals – Many local restaurants on Maui offer discounted or buffet-style breakfasts, which can be a great way to start the day without breaking the bank. Some hotels also offer free breakfast or brunch specials, so ask about those when making your booking.
- Group Dining – If you're traveling with a group, check if any restaurants offer special rates for group dining. This can be especially useful if you’re organizing a large party or family meal.
- Grocery Stores & Picnics – Consider visiting local grocery stores like Safeway or the island's farmers markets to buy fresh produce, snacks, and ingredients for a picnic or meal prep. This can save you a lot if you're staying in a condo or vacation rental with a kitchen.
Overall, Maui offers plenty of opportunities to save on dining without sacrificing quality. The In Kind app is a fantastic tool, and with a bit of research and planning, you can make the most of your trip without overspending. Enjoy your time on the island!
