Taste of Soulard
Hi all. We have been to St Louis many times and love it! We unfortunately can not make it MardiGras weekend but are considering visiting the weekend before and I see the Taste of Soulard is going on as well as the pet parade as part of carnival activities. Is this a fun time? I’m thinking about staying in an air b and b in the Soulard neighborhood for a long weekend getaway. Any thoughts, advice and/or sharing of experiences are welcome. We’ve visited Soulard in the past to eat, shop and listen to music but have never stayed in the neighborhood. Thanks in advance!
The weekend before Mardi Gras, with the Taste of Soulard and the Pet Parade, is definitely a fun time to visit St. Louis, especially if you love lively neighborhood events and the carnival spirit. Since you’re already familiar with Soulard, staying there will give you a fantastic chance to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Here’s what you can expect and some tips to make the most of your visit:
- Taste of Soulard: This is a wonderful event for foodies. It’s essentially a food festival that showcases the best restaurants, bars, and eateries in the Soulard neighborhood. You'll be able to sample a variety of dishes, from Southern specialties to local favorites like St. Louis-style ribs, toasted ravioli, and gooey butter cake. It’s a relaxed and fun event, perfect for a long weekend. The weather might be a bit chilly, but you can enjoy a warm drink or cocktail while sampling great food.
- Pet Parade: If you love pets, the Pet Parade is a must-see! It’s quirky, fun, and filled with costumes and great energy. Locals (and their pets) go all out for this event, so you’ll see everything from dogs in fancy outfits to other pets dressed for the occasion. It’s a lighthearted and family-friendly event, great for a quick laugh and to experience some of the more unique parts of St. Louis’ Mardi Gras celebrations.
- Staying in Soulard: Staying in Soulard itself will give you the true local experience. It’s a lively area with a rich history, known for its historic 19th-century brick homes, bars, and live music venues. You'll be able to walk to some of the best spots, like Sidney Street Kitchen, McGurk’s Irish Pub, and The Soulard Farmers Market, which is open year-round and a must-visit. Staying in the heart of Soulard means you're close to all the action during the festivities, so you won't miss out on the vibe of the neighborhood.
- Things to Keep in Mind: Soulard can get crowded during events like the Taste of Soulard and Pet Parade, especially with the influx of people heading to the bars and restaurants for the festivities. The neighborhood is very walkable, so parking can be a challenge, so consider using a rideshare service or taking public transport if you’re not driving. Noise levels can be higher, so if you’re not used to a lively nightlife, you might want to pick an Airbnb that’s a bit off the main party street to avoid the late-night noise.
