Hello! I'm headed to NOLA in mid-late March for a conference at the riverfront (arriving March 18, departing March 23). Trouble is, even the special bloc rate to stay at the hotel where the conference is being held is a bit out of my budget (like, it would be almost $1,700 once you add in the taxes and fees). Are there any places I could stay within walking distance of the Hilton Riverside?
I'm a female solo traveler, so I also want to make sure I'm safe walking back and forth. Definitely not a wild party girl. I was looking at the Meridien and the Doubletree by Hilton, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or has other suggestions?
Thanks for the help!
It sounds like you're planning a great trip to New Orleans for the conference, and I understand the need to find a more affordable, safe, and convenient option for lodging. The Hilton Riverside area is quite central, so there are several hotels nearby that are within walking distance and should meet your budget needs. Additionally, walking around this part of the city is generally safe, especially during the day and in the evenings when it's busier. Here are a few suggestions based on your criteria:
1. Le Méridien New Orleans
Le Méridien is a solid option for a mid-range hotel in the area. It's located just a few blocks from the Hilton Riverside, and it's a stylish, upscale property with a great location. You’ll be within walking distance to the French Quarter, Riverwalk, and various dining options. The area around the hotel is fairly active, especially during business hours, and while it’s generally safe, it’s always a good idea to be mindful, especially at night.
2. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New Orleans
The DoubleTree is also nearby, located just a couple of blocks from the Hilton Riverside. It's a well-known chain that offers comfortable rooms and standard amenities. The property is nice, and their signature cookies are a nice touch! The area around the DoubleTree is relatively safe and walkable. However, like many areas in New Orleans, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings, especially later in the evening.
3. The Whitney Hotel
Located in the Warehouse District, The Whitney is another good option for a more boutique experience that’s close to the Hilton Riverside (about a 5-minute walk). This hotel has a lot of character and offers a quieter, less commercial feel compared to the larger chain hotels. The neighborhood is generally safe, with plenty of local restaurants and shops around.
4. The InterContinental New Orleans
Another upscale option just a short walk from the Hilton Riverside is the InterContinental. The hotel offers a refined atmosphere, a pool, and excellent service. It’s in the heart of the city, with plenty of options for food and entertainment nearby. While it's on the higher end in terms of pricing, it could still be a bit more affordable compared to the Hilton Riverside, especially if you book in advance.
5. Omni Riverfront Hotel
Omni is another solid choice that’s within walking distance of the Hilton Riverside, located in the heart of the Warehouse District. This hotel offers modern accommodations at a reasonable price and is known for its excellent customer service. It's a bit quieter than the French Quarter but still close enough to all the action.
Safety Considerations
As a solo traveler, it's great that you're thinking about safety. The area around the Hilton Riverside, especially during the daytime and early evening, is generally safe. However, as with any major city, it's always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night. When walking back to your hotel in the evening, try to stick to well-lit streets and be cautious, especially if you're walking alone. New Orleans is known for its vibrant nightlife, so it's often busier and safer in areas with more activity. If you ever feel uncomfortable, consider using a rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft), which can be a quick and safe way to get around at night.
Conclusion
For the best combination of budget, safety, and proximity to the Hilton Riverside, I’d recommend checking out Le Méridien, The Whitney, or the Omni Riverfront Hotel. All of these options are within walking distance and should provide you with a comfortable and safe stay in New Orleans. If you’re looking for something a little quieter and more boutique, The Whitney could be a great choice. If you prefer a more reliable, chain hotel experience, DoubleTree by Hilton or Omni are both solid options.
I hope this helps, and have a fantastic time in New Orleans!
