Running track on Maui

I’m a track and field athlete visiting Maui and was wondering if anyone could recommend places where I can find a good running track or facility to train. Could you share any locations that are open to the public

And can you sent me opening hours

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to Maui! As a track and field athlete, you’ll be happy to know that there are several places on the island where you can find running tracks or facilities to train. Maui has a few public tracks and sports complexes that can accommodate your needs. Here are some of the top locations for running tracks and general training:

1. War Memorial Stadium Track (Kahului)

This is one of the most popular and accessible tracks on Maui, located in Kahului. It is an all-weather synthetic track and is used for track and field events, running, and general fitness training.

  • Location: 700 Halia Nakoa St, Kahului, HI
  • Opening Hours: Monday – Saturday, 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM (hours may vary, so it's a good idea to call ahead)
  • Facilities: The track is open to the public for running and walking. The surrounding area also has athletic fields and facilities, making it a great spot for both training and practice.

2. Maui High School Track (Kahului)

The track at Maui High School is another great option for athletes looking to train. It’s a well-maintained, all-weather track that is often used by local high school teams, but it’s open to the public when not in use for school activities.

  • Location: 660 S Lono Ave, Kahului, HI
  • Opening Hours: The track is generally open to the public in the evenings and on weekends, but it’s always best to check with the school’s administration to confirm availability, especially during school seasons or athletic events.
  • Facilities: Besides the track, Maui High School also has field areas that might be useful for other training exercises, though access to these might be limited during certain school events.

3. Lahaina Civic Center Track (Lahaina)

Located in Lahaina, the Lahaina Civic Center has a decent outdoor track where local athletes and residents train. It’s less crowded compared to other tracks on the island and is ideal for a quiet session.

  • Location: 1840 Honoapi'ilani Hwy, Lahaina, HI
  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The track is generally open when the facility is not hosting events or programs.
  • Facilities: The track is an outdoor, all-weather facility that is used for various local sports events and activities.

4. Kihei Aquatic Center Track (Kihei)

While primarily known for swimming and aquatics, the Kihei Aquatic Center also has a small running area and a track that can be useful for light jogs or warm-ups before swimming sessions. It’s more of a multi-use facility, but the area is available for running if you’re looking for something different.

  • Location: 303 E Lipoa St, Kihei, HI
  • Opening Hours: Monday – Saturday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM (check for specific hours for running track access, as they may vary)
  • Facilities: Aside from the track, the center has a swimming pool and gym, which could be great for cross-training if you’re interested in combining different types of exercise.

5. Private Gyms with Running Facilities

If you prefer indoor training or a more controlled environment, several private gyms on Maui have running machines (treadmills) and facilities for training. Some gyms also offer personal training services, so if you're looking for specialized training, this could be a good option.

  • Examples of gyms with indoor running facilities:
    • YMCA Maui (Kahului)
    • Fit for Life Maui (Kihei)
    • CrossFit Maui (Kahului)

General Tips:

  • Check with local facilities ahead of time for any updates on track access or any closures due to events or maintenance.
  • Bring plenty of water with you, especially if you're running in Maui’s warm weather.
  • If you're planning to run outdoors, early morning or later in the evening might be the best times to avoid the midday heat.

I hope this helps, and that you have an amazing time training and enjoying Maui’s beautiful scenery while you're here. Best of luck with your training, and enjoy your time on the island!
