Hi,
We are traveling from the west coast to Oahu during Christmas this year for the first time with our 2 tweens (11 and 12). We are going for 7 nights and have tentative itinerary of first 3 nights at Turtle Bay and then 4 nights at Royal Hawaiian or Sheraton. Plan on just hanging at resort for first three nights (maybe do whale watching tour) and then 4 nights in Waikiki where we will visit Pearl Harbor and check out other sights near Waikiki. We are debating doing all 7 nights in Waikiki as we are worried about bad weather at Turtle Bay North Shore?
Thanks for any advice.
J
Your plan to split your stay between Turtle Bay on the North Shore and Waikiki sounds wonderful! Both locations offer a unique experience, and it’s great that you’re already planning some family-friendly activities. Here are some considerations to help you decide whether to stick with your 3-night/4-night split or opt for all 7 nights in Waikiki:
Weather Concerns at Turtle Bay: The North Shore of Oahu, where Turtle Bay is located, can have rainier weather, especially in the winter months (December). However, it’s also the best place to experience Oahu’s natural beauty, quieter beaches, and the opportunity to see whale migration during the winter. While it’s true that the weather can be unpredictable, the North Shore tends to have dry mornings with rain often coming in the afternoons or evenings. So, there’s a chance you’ll still have pleasant weather for your beach time and activities. If your family enjoys peace and natural beauty, the North Shore is a fantastic option despite the weather risks.
Things to Do at Turtle Bay: During your 3-night stay at Turtle Bay, you’ll have the chance to unwind in a more secluded setting. Turtle Bay offers plenty of on-site activities like bike rentals, horseback riding, and nature trails. If you’re interested in a whale-watching tour, this is a great place to do it, as the North Shore is one of the best locations for seeing humpback whales in December. You can also enjoy the quieter beaches, such as Kawela Bay, and possibly spot sea turtles, which are abundant in the area. If the weather is not ideal for outdoor activities, there are plenty of indoor options at Turtle Bay, including spa treatments and local dining spots.
Switching to Waikiki: Waikiki, on the south shore of Oahu, offers more consistent weather and a lively urban atmosphere. It’s also the hub for many of Oahu’s major attractions, like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and the Honolulu Zoo, making it an ideal spot for your last 4 nights. Waikiki is bustling with activities for families, including the famous Waikiki Beach, shopping at the International Market Place, and lots of dining options. If your family enjoys being in the heart of the action and having easy access to local attractions, Waikiki is a great place to spend your last few days.
Should You Spend All 7 Nights in Waikiki?
Conclusion: If your main priority is easy access to major attractions like Pearl Harbor, and you prefer a more urban experience with lots of family-friendly activities, staying in Waikiki for the entire 7 nights would be a great choice. However, if your family values quieter, more natural surroundings and enjoys the chance to experience a different side of Oahu, the 3-night stay at Turtle Bay will give you a refreshing change of pace before heading to the more bustling Waikiki for the remainder of your trip.
Since it’s your first time in Oahu, I’d recommend sticking to your original plan of splitting the stay between the two locations, as it will give you the chance to experience both sides of the island. But if you’re concerned about the weather, especially at Turtle Bay, you can always switch the whole trip to Waikiki. Either way, you’re sure to have a fantastic time!
