Sailing/windsurfing on Oahu
Is there any place on Oahu, where i can rent a smaler sailing yolle or dinghy, possibly windsurf? How are the windconditions towards the end of july?
Thanks in advance
Oahu offers several great spots for renting small sailboats, dinghies, and windsurfing equipment. The island has a mix of calm waters ideal for beginners and more challenging areas for experienced sailors and windsurfers. Late July is typically part of Oahu’s summer season, meaning lighter trade winds compared to the winter months, making conditions generally favorable for beginners or casual sailing.
Here are some options for rentals and lessons:
- Hawaiian Watersports Rentals – Waikiki: Located near Waikiki, they offer small sailing dinghies, Hobie Cats, and windsurfing rentals. Great for both beginners and intermediate sailors. Lessons are available if needed.
- Kailua Beach Adventures – Windward Side: Offers sailboat, catamaran, and windsurf rentals. Kailua Bay is a calm, protected area perfect for beginners and families. Winds in July are usually mild, averaging 10–15 knots in the afternoons.
- Prince Waikiki / Ala Moana Beach Park: Some local shops here provide small sailboats and windsurf boards for hourly rentals. The waters near Ala Moana are calm with light trade winds in summer, ideal for practicing sailing or windsurfing.
- North Shore (Sunset Beach, Haleiwa): While more known for surfing, some shops offer windsurfing and small sailboat rentals. Winds can be stronger here than on the south shore, so more suitable for experienced windsurfers.
Tips for sailing and windsurfing in late July:
- Trade winds in summer are usually lighter, making the ocean calmer and safer for beginners. Mornings are often gentler than afternoons.
- Check local wind forecasts daily. Websites like Windy.com or local Hawaiian weather services can give up-to-date conditions.
- If you are a beginner, stay on the south or windward side of the island (Waikiki, Kailua), where waters are more sheltered.
- Always wear a personal flotation device and sun protection, as the sun can be intense in July.
Overall, for a combination of small sailboat or dinghy sailing and beginner-friendly windsurfing, Waikiki and Kailua Bay are the top choices. North Shore locations are better suited for more advanced windsurfers who enjoy stronger winds and waves.
