Maine in April with Children

Hi - We are traveling to Maine (south area) in Mid April and have not found many boats that go out. I would love some other exploring suggestions for my family (2 young kids age 3 and 6). Will we be able to possible spot some wildlife like whales, etc. from the beaches? Will the hike by Cape Elizabeth be doable for the youngins? We know it will be chilly but are prepared for that.

Thanks in advance!

Visiting Maine in mid-April with young children can be a wonderful experience, although it’s good to be prepared for the chilly weather and the fact that some activities, particularly boat tours, may not be available yet due to the season. Here are some great family-friendly ideas for exploring the area, wildlife spotting, and outdoor activities that can be fun for your kids:

Wildlife Spotting: While whale watching tours may not be running in mid-April (they generally start around May or June), you can still spot wildlife along Maine's coast and beaches. Some animals, such as seals, seabirds, and possibly even some early-season whales, can be seen from the shore. Here are a few places to check out:

  • Acadia National Park: Although Acadia is famous for its hiking trails, it’s also great for wildlife spotting. You might be able to spot seals basking on the rocks, eagles, or other birds. You could also try visiting the Schoodic Peninsula, which is part of Acadia National Park, where you can see wildlife and the rugged coastline.
  • Capitol Island: If the weather allows, you may be able to find early-season boat tours or ferries to nearby islands, like Capitol Island, where you might get a chance to see seals or other marine wildlife from the boat or along the shore.
  • Beaches and Shoreline: Check out beaches like Sand Beach in Acadia, where the kids can run around while you keep an eye out for wildlife. Seals and seabirds are frequently spotted along Maine’s coastline, even from the beach.

Hiking with Kids: As for hiking near Cape Elizabeth or Acadia National Park, there are a number of kid-friendly trails that should be suitable for your young children, even with the chilly weather:

  • Portland Head Light (Cape Elizabeth): This is a relatively easy, short walk that will be perfect for young kids. The hike is mostly flat, and the views of the lighthouse and ocean are stunning. It’s an easy walk with plenty of spots to rest along the way, and the lighthouse is a fun destination for kids.
  • Jordan Pond Path (Acadia National Park): The Jordan Pond Path is a 3.5-mile loop, but you can shorten the hike by taking a more leisurely walk along the pond. It’s a beautiful spot, and the boardwalk path can be great for young kids. However, be prepared for some chilly breezes near the water.
  • Ocean Path (Acadia National Park): Another easy trail in Acadia, the Ocean Path is 2 miles long and follows the coast. It’s flat and has plenty of scenic spots for kids to explore and enjoy the views, without being too strenuous.

Indoor and Other Activities: If the weather proves too chilly for extended outdoor adventures, there are several indoor and family-friendly activities to consider:

  • Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine: Located in Portland, this museum is a great indoor option where kids can play and explore. They offer interactive exhibits that engage children in learning while having fun.
  • Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad: The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad in Portland offers scenic train rides that can be a fun experience for your young kids. They may even have special events or themed trains in April.
  • Aquarium Visits: The Maine Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor could be a fun stop if you want to experience marine life without going on a boat. They have exhibits featuring marine species native to Maine, including fish and seals.

Weather Considerations: April in Maine can be unpredictable, but temperatures generally range from 30°F to 50°F (around 0°C to 10°C). Be sure to bring layers and warm clothing, especially for outdoor activities. The wind chill near the water can make it feel colder, so be prepared for that, too. The weather is not likely to be as warm as it is in London at the same time, but it’s still a beautiful time to explore Maine’s natural beauty.

Conclusion: Maine in April can be a fantastic experience for families with young children, especially if you enjoy the outdoors and are prepared for cooler weather. While some boat tours may not be available yet, there are still plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, hiking, and other family-friendly activities. Acadia National Park and Cape Elizabeth are wonderful destinations with easy hikes and plenty of natural beauty to explore.

Enjoy your trip, and have a wonderful time exploring Maine with your family!
