So we want to see this iconic spot and know it's popular for sunset but the only day we can seem to fit it in on a packed 3 days would be early morning on our last day before heading over to Schoodic Peninsula and then on to the airport (so yes,a fair amount of driving this day but we're Midwesterns and don't find that an issue - the jokes are legit).
But I've seen "the grounds open at 9am". Does this mean everything or just the grounds right around the lighthouse but the parking lot and trail/stairs path down to the rocky shore for the classic shot are open? Or is that closed too? Figure we'll arrive between 7:30 to 8:30am and spend time there and want to be heading towards Schoodic by 10am at latest so would hate to have to feel rushed if we cannot enter until 9am.
Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed spots in Acadia, and yes, it’s especially popular at sunset, but early morning can be a great time as it’s much quieter. Regarding your timing question: the “grounds open at 9am” notice generally refers to the fenced area immediately around the lighthouse itself. The parking lot, access road, and the public trail/stairs down to the rocky shore for the classic photo viewpoint are open earlier than that, so you can arrive at 7:30–8:30am without being locked out.
Here’s what you can expect if you go early in the morning:
Practical tips:
So, yes—you can comfortably see and photograph Bass Harbor Lighthouse in the early morning before heading to Schoodic Peninsula. The “9am opening” doesn’t prevent you from accessing the classic photo spots along the shore and viewpoint.
