Staying in Venice Beach area....safe?

Hi everyone,

I have the opportunity to stay in a friend's house near 7th and Vernon, in mid-May, for a couple of weeks.

I don't really know anyone in the area, and i don't know the area well (though of course i know of Venice Beach and surroundings, and i've been to Santa Monica and other areas)....

Is that area safe for a single woman to walk around in? I might just have a bike, not a car...

Thanks for advice! I was excited about the 'beachy' area but now wondering if I'll feel comfortable...

The area around 7th and Vernon in Venice is generally considered part of the greater Venice neighborhood but is not directly on the beach or the main touristy areas. Venice Beach itself, especially the boardwalk and nearby streets, can be vibrant and fun during the day, but there are pockets where safety can be a concern, particularly at night.

For a single woman walking or biking around, the following considerations are important:

  • Daytime activity is usually fine in the main tourist and beach areas, such as the Venice Boardwalk, Abbott Kinney Boulevard, and around the canals.
  • Early mornings and evenings in less-trafficked streets or near industrial areas can feel less safe; it's best to avoid poorly lit or deserted areas.
  • Bike use is generally practical, but stick to well-traveled streets and designated bike lanes. Consider a sturdy lock for security.
  • Neighborhoods east of Venice (closer to Vernon) have higher crime statistics compared to the beachfront; stay aware of your surroundings and consider riding or walking with a friend if possible.

Some tips to feel safer and enjoy the area:

  • Stay on streets with active businesses and pedestrians.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or flashy items.
  • Check local apps or forums for up-to-date safety advisories.
  • Consider using rideshare services if you plan to be out late.
  • If possible, get to know your immediate neighbors or friends in the area; local knowledge is invaluable.

In summary, you can enjoy Venice’s beachy and artistic vibe safely during the day, but for a couple of weeks, especially alone, it’s wise to be cautious in areas a bit further from the main tourist and commercial streets. With awareness and sensible precautions, the stay can be enjoyable, but planning your routes and timing carefully is key.
