Christmas

We wanted to visit Hawaii over Christmas. Is this a good time of year? This would be our first trip to Hawaii, and we will be flying from the East Coast . We are planning to stay at least 10 days. My husband and I are seasoned travelers and are retired so we are fairly flexible with activities and enjoy stay in at nice resorts. Thx in advance for recommendations and suggestions!

Visiting Hawaii over Christmas can be a wonderful experience, but there are a few factors to consider so you can plan accordingly. December is part of the high season, as many travelers from colder climates visit Hawaii to enjoy its warm weather, so resorts and flights can be more expensive and busy. That said, the islands are beautifully decorated for the holidays, and many resorts and towns have festive events, concerts, and special activities that can make your trip very special.

Weather-wise, Christmas in Hawaii is generally pleasant. Temperatures usually range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24–29°C) on the coast, with slightly cooler temperatures in higher elevations. You might encounter occasional showers, particularly on the windward (northeastern) sides of the islands, but these are often brief and shouldn’t significantly impact outdoor activities.

Some considerations for planning your 10-day trip:

  • Book flights and accommodations early to secure the best rates and availability, especially if you prefer luxury resorts.
  • Expect some crowds at popular beaches, parks, and attractions like Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, or Haleakala, especially on the islands of Oahu and Maui.
  • Car rentals are essential if you plan to explore outside resort areas, and availability may be limited, so reserve in advance.

Activities to enjoy during Christmas in Hawaii:

  • Beach time: Relax on the world-famous beaches such as Waikiki, Ka’anapali, or Poipu.
  • Nature & hiking: Explore volcanoes on the Big Island, Haleakala sunrise on Maui, or the Na Pali Coast hikes on Kauai.
  • Festive events: Many resorts host Christmas luaus, concerts, and craft fairs. Honolulu City Lights is a popular event on Oahu with holiday displays and performances.
  • Snorkeling and water activities: Even in December, snorkeling, whale watching (starts in late December in Maui), and paddleboarding are enjoyable.
  • Cultural experiences: Visit Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, or attend a traditional Hawaiian holiday show to learn more about local traditions.

If you are flexible and prefer a quieter holiday, consider staying on the less populated islands such as Kauai or the Big Island for a more relaxed experience. Alternatively, Oahu and Maui offer more events, shopping, and nightlife if you enjoy festive energy and activities.

In summary, Christmas in Hawaii is a popular and beautiful time to visit, with great weather, festive atmosphere, and plenty of activities. Booking early and planning around crowds will help you maximize your enjoyment.
