Hi! I would like to start planning a trip to Maine with my husband and one year old in September. We are thinking one week and are flexible with dates. We will fly out of either Milwaukee or Chicago. We like to do some leisurely hikes (since we will have our son with us),l and enjoy beautiful scenery. The only thing we would definitely like to see is Acadia National Park. Otherwise, we are open. I like the idea of seeing the fall foliage, but am not sure if I would prefer that or warmer weather. Also curious re spending time in Portland or not. Recommendations for places to stay also appreciated, mid-range prices. Thanks! Feel free to direct me to other posts, but everything I’ve seen is rather outdated.
That sounds like a wonderful trip! Maine is an excellent choice for a family vacation, especially in September when the weather is still warm, and the fall foliage is starting to show. Here’s a plan to help you make the most of your week in Maine with your one-year-old:
1. Acadia National Park (a must-see!)
Acadia National Park is a fantastic destination for families. It offers a mix of easy hikes, scenic drives, and plenty of wildlife, all of which are perfect for enjoying at a leisurely pace with a little one. Some highlights for families with young children include:
2. Weather in September
September in Maine can be a great time to visit for both warmer weather and the start of fall foliage. The weather is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to 70s °F (18–24°C). Early September still offers plenty of warm weather, while late September is when the foliage begins to peak in certain areas, especially in the northern parts of the state.
If you want to experience fall foliage, but still enjoy pleasant weather, I’d suggest visiting in early to mid-September. This way, you can enjoy the scenic beauty and potentially catch the start of the autumn colors, but with warmer temperatures than you’d find later in the month.
3. Portland: Worth a Visit?
Portland is Maine’s largest city and has a lot to offer, but whether or not you want to include it in your itinerary depends on your preferences. Portland has a vibrant waterfront, excellent seafood restaurants, and charming neighborhoods with unique shops. However, it is a busier city, and depending on your pace, you may find it less relaxing than the more rural parts of Maine.
If you’re interested in history and food, Portland might be worth a stop for a couple of days. But if you prefer more nature-focused experiences and peaceful surroundings, you might want to spend more time exploring Acadia and nearby areas.
4. Other Places to Stay and Explore
If you’re planning to stay in the Bar Harbor area near Acadia, there are several family-friendly hotels and lodges that offer mid-range prices:
If you’re looking for something quieter or further from the crowds, you can consider staying in small towns like Southwest Harbor or Somesville on Mount Desert Island, which offer a more peaceful, laid-back vibe.
5. Suggestions for Easy Hikes & Scenic Areas
Enjoy your time in Maine! With a mix of Acadia National Park, scenic drives, and charming towns, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to relax and explore the beautiful natural landscapes with your family.
