Named for its "precipitous peaks, flat against the sky," it is known as "the most scenic spot in the north." Records of travel and development of Tianping Mountain date back to the Three Kingdoms period. Its grandeur and beauty surpass even the renowned mountains south of the Yangtze River." In 1999, the Chengjiao Township People's Government began a two-year preliminary development of the mountain before officially opening it to the public.
Tianping Mountain is enigmatic and mysterious, a place where immortals and Buddhists throughout history, sages and scholars have wandered and rested, and emperors and rebels have stationed troops and conducted observations. Lü Dongdong, a Tang Dynasty figure, once lived in seclusion here, cultivating his immortality. Ruins of Mozao Temple, Black Dragon Pond, and Lü Valley still exist.
Tianping Mountain boasts a temperate monsoon climate, with six major peaks and five minor ones, forming a coherent, interconnected massif. Its towering, steep peaks pierce the heavens. Liu Kai, a Song Dynasty imperial censor, lamented, "Even a skilled artist cannot paint it." The area is suitable for travel in all seasons.
