Walking in New Orleans can be a wonderful way to experience the city, and it sounds like you’re comfortable with exploring on foot! As for the walk from Buffa's on Esplanade Avenue to Kermit Ruffins’ Mother-in-Law Lounge, it’s definitely doable, but there are some safety considerations you might want to take into account.

Distance and General Safety

The distance between Buffa's and the Mother-in-Law Lounge is about 1.5 miles, which is roughly a 30-minute walk, depending on your pace. The route takes you along Esplanade Avenue, which is generally a busy street with a mix of residential and commercial areas. While Esplanade is a major thoroughfare and is often well-traveled, there are some sections of the walk that are less populated, especially after dark.

Safety Considerations

In general, Esplanade Avenue is relatively safe during the daytime, but, like any urban area, it can vary. Walking at night, especially after dark, can be less ideal in certain areas, as parts of the street are quieter and may not have as much foot traffic. New Orleans, like any city, has neighborhoods that are safer than others, and it's always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in less crowded areas.

Suggestions for a Safe Walk

  • Travel during daylight hours: If possible, plan your walk during daylight or early evening hours when the street is more populated, and there’s more activity. This will help you feel more comfortable while walking.
  • Avoid walking too late at night: While New Orleans is known for its vibrant nightlife, it’s best to avoid long walks late at night in quieter areas like Esplanade Avenue. If you are out late, consider taking a ride share back to your accommodations.
  • Stick to well-lit streets: If you do walk at night, stick to the more heavily trafficked, well-lit parts of Esplanade Avenue and try to avoid side streets or less populated areas.
  • Use common sense: Like in any city, be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings, and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it’s always best to take a safer route or consider other transportation options.

Alternative Transportation

If you’re not comfortable with the walk or it’s too late in the day, New Orleans has several transportation options, such as the St. Charles streetcar, which is a fun way to get around, or Uber/Lyft. Even though you mentioned not wanting to rely on ride-sharing services, they can be a good option for certain areas or after dark for added convenience and safety.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the walk from Buffa’s to Kermit’s is not overly dangerous, but it’s best to be cautious, especially after dark. New Orleans is a city with a lot of character, but like any city, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings. If you’re walking during the day or early evening, it should be a pleasant stroll through the neighborhood.
