Traverse City outskirts

My husband and I have flights in and out of Traverse City for a week-long summer getaway in mid August. We were able to secure hotel/Inn reservations in Mackinac Island and other popular areas but we are totally out of luck for a one night weekend stay directly in Traverse City where we had hoped to stay for our first and/or last night. The only availability seems to be in the $700-$800 range for a simple hotel room, which is just more than we are willing to spend. With our second night already booked in Glen Arbor, where else might we consider for just one night (Saturday) that would be interesting for a quick overnight. On the return, we'll be driving back from Mackinac Island and departing from TVC early in the morning. Any suggestions for a reasonable area close to the airport on a Friday night? I realize many places have two night stay requirement on the weekend, but that isn't possible on this trip. Thanks for any advice.

It sounds like you’re planning a lovely getaway to Traverse City, and while it can be tricky to find reasonably priced accommodations during peak summer months, there are a few options for a great one-night stay near the city and close to the airport without breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions that could work well for your Saturday night and your return on Friday:

1. Traverse City Outskirts (Saturday Night Stay): Since you’re looking for something a little more affordable for your first night, you might want to consider staying just outside the downtown Traverse City area. Here are a few options:

  • Interlochen: Located about 20 minutes south of Traverse City, Interlochen is known for its state park and the beautiful Interlochen Center for the Arts. You’ll find a variety of lodgings, including smaller inns and charming B&Bs that might offer a more reasonable rate than in the heart of Traverse City. The area is scenic and peaceful, with easy access to both Traverse City and Glen Arbor, which might suit your travel route. It also has plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, like hiking and lakefront views.
  • Crystal Lake Area: About 25 minutes west of Traverse City, Crystal Lake offers a scenic and quieter option. You can look for accommodations near Benzonia or Beulah, which are charming small towns by the lake. Many of these inns offer more affordable options and beautiful surroundings for a peaceful night before heading to Glen Arbor.
  • Suttons Bay: This quaint village, just about 20 minutes north of Traverse City, offers a small-town feel with wineries, local shops, and views of the bay. Suttons Bay has a range of charming inns and bed-and-breakfasts that may be more budget-friendly compared to Traverse City’s more expensive hotels.

2. Near Traverse City Airport (Friday Night Stay): Since your flight leaves early on Sunday morning, it makes sense to find a place closer to the airport for your final night. While many hotels near the airport might be on the pricier side, here are some options that could be worth considering:

  • West Bay Beach Resort: Just a short drive from the airport, West Bay Beach offers a lovely location on the shores of West Bay, with affordable rooms during the off-peak times, especially if you book ahead. The resort has a laid-back atmosphere and is only a short distance from downtown Traverse City, which allows you to explore the area before your early morning flight.
  • The Bayshore Resort: Another great option near the airport, this resort offers a comfortable stay with easy access to Traverse City’s amenities and close proximity to the airport. It’s often more affordable than the downtown hotels, and you can enjoy waterfront views along with a relaxing environment for your last night.
  • Holiday Inn Express Traverse City: This hotel is a solid budget option near the airport and offers modern, clean accommodations. It's convenient if you're looking for a straightforward stay without extra amenities, and it’s just a short drive from both the airport and the downtown area, making it easy for your early departure.

By staying just outside of Traverse City or near the airport, you can enjoy the area without the hefty price tag. Whether you're looking for a peaceful lakeside retreat in Interlochen or a more affordable stay near the airport, you’ll still be close enough to explore the area and enjoy the sights before continuing on your trip to Glen Arbor and beyond.

Have a wonderful trip to Traverse City, Mackinac Island, and the beautiful surrounding areas!
