What area to visit

Hi, my husband, our 8 year old and myself will be visiting LA this summer. We are going to stay in Anaheim for a few days to do Disney but also wanted to stay somewhere else in the LA area for a couple of days. My husband and I were there about 10 years ago and stayed in Santa Monica. We did the hop on hop off tour and thought that would be a perfect way to show our son. But I have been seeing a lot of reviews recently saying that Santa Monica isn’t a safe area anymore- is this true? Would there be a better area to stay? We would love somewhere with walkable restaurants/ shops near by, as well as some kind of driving tour we could do.

Thank you

Santa Monica remains a popular area for tourists and families, and many parts are still vibrant with restaurants, shops, and the pier. However, there have been reports of increased street homelessness and petty crime in certain areas, which may make some visitors feel uneasy, especially when traveling with children. That said, most of the areas around the main tourist corridors—like the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier, and beachfront—remain generally safe during the day.

If you are looking for alternatives that are family-friendly, walkable, and convenient for sightseeing, consider these neighborhoods:

  • West Hollywood (WeHo) – Central location with plenty of restaurants, shops, and easy Uber access to Hollywood attractions. It's lively but generally safe and well-patrolled.
  • Beverly Hills – Iconic area with safe streets, high-end shopping, and easy driving access to famous LA landmarks. Ideal for a short scenic stay.
  • Hollywood – Near the hop-on hop-off bus routes and famous attractions like the Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Walk of Fame. Some areas can feel crowded, but main tourist streets are generally secure.
  • Pasadena – Quieter and very family-friendly, with charming streets, restaurants, and Old Town Pasadena for walking. It's a bit farther from Hollywood attractions but offers a different, safer vibe.

For sightseeing with an 8-year-old, a hop-on hop-off tour is still an excellent idea, as it covers Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and downtown highlights while reducing the stress of driving and parking. You can also combine this with a scenic drive along Mulholland Drive or the Sunset Strip to enjoy views without leaving the car.

Tips for a smooth stay with a child:

  • Book accommodations in areas with well-lit streets and nearby dining options.
  • Plan outdoor activities during daylight hours, especially if exploring busier neighborhoods.
  • Use rideshare or hotel shuttles to minimize walking through less busy areas in the evening.

Overall, Santa Monica can still work for a short visit if you stick to the main tourist areas, but West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, or Pasadena might offer a safer and equally convenient base with good access to sightseeing, restaurants, and shops.
