Public Transit a Viable/Safe Option from LA to Huntington?
Hi there,
I have looked up transport to Huntington Beach on Google Maps and Rome2Rio, and get a few different options that involve the Metro and a couole of buses. Has anynone done this route before? Also open to taking the train from Union Station, but that doesn't seem easier to get to the beach. Thanks in advance!
Traveling from Los Angeles to Huntington Beach via public transit is possible, but it’s not as convenient or fast as driving. The route typically involves a combination of Metro trains, buses, or regional rail services like Metrolink. Safety is generally reasonable on these systems during the day, but like any large urban area, it’s wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially during off-peak hours or late at night.
Here are the main public transit options:
- Metro + Bus Combination: You can take the Metro Red or Purple Line from central LA to a connecting station (like Norwalk Station) and then transfer to a bus (OCTA or Metro Express) that goes to Huntington Beach. This route can take 2–3 hours depending on wait times and transfers.
- Metrolink Train: From Union Station, you can take the Metrolink Orange County Line toward Oceanside. You would get off at the Santa Ana or Tustin station and then take a connecting OCTA bus (like Route 1 or 33) toward Huntington Beach. Travel time is roughly 1.5–2 hours plus waiting time for the bus connection.
- Direct Bus Options: Some routes by OCTA or regional express buses can connect parts of LA to Orange County, but these are limited in frequency and may require multiple transfers.
Safety and comfort considerations:
- During daytime hours, public transit is generally safe, and most stations are monitored.
- Evening and late-night travel can feel less secure; stick to well-lit areas and main transit hubs.
- Have your trip mapped out in advance, check schedules, and allow extra time for transfers.
- Keep belongings close, as buses and trains can be crowded during peak hours.
Alternative suggestion:
- Rideshare or carpooling from LA to Huntington Beach is significantly faster and more convenient, usually under 1.5 hours depending on traffic.
- If you’re planning multiple trips to beaches or OC attractions, renting a car for the day may be worth it.
In summary, public transit is viable for this trip but involves transfers and longer travel time. If convenience and flexibility are priorities, driving or rideshare is generally preferable.
