Hiking in Volcanos ?

I want to take some of the big moderate hikes in volcanoes tomorrow and I did not bring hiking shoes. But I have hiking sandals that were great all over Europe this summer super comfortable and very thick plus I have just plain tennis shoes. I’d like to wear my hiking sandals would they be adequate and it’s a lava crater? Thank you so much for answering

It's great that you're planning to hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! The park offers some stunning and unique landscapes, but it’s important to be prepared for the specific terrain, especially when hiking near lava craters.

Regarding your footwear options—hiking sandals can be a good choice if they are sturdy, offer good grip, and have enough protection for your feet. However, there are a few things to consider when hiking in volcanic areas:

1. Terrain in the Volcanoes National Park:

The trails around the volcanoes often have rough, uneven terrain, including jagged lava rock, which can be challenging to navigate. Hiking sandals may be fine for some trails, but if you're heading into areas with sharp, rocky lava or gravel, you might want to consider footwear that offers more protection, especially around the toes and soles. The ground can be rough and sharp, and if your sandals don't provide good foot protection, you risk injury.

  • If your hiking sandals have thick soles with good arch support and a secure fit, they should be sufficient for most moderate trails in the park.
  • However, if the sandals are open-toed or don't offer ankle support, it might be better to wear your tennis shoes, especially on trails with rocky or uneven terrain.
  • Keep in mind that some trails, like those near the Kīlauea Crater or the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, may involve walking on volcanic rock, which can be quite abrasive and slippery when wet.

2. Considerations for Lava Crater Trails:

If you're planning to hike in areas near the lava craters, such as the Kīlauea Iki Trail, this trail involves walking over a cooled lava lake. The terrain here can be quite rough, with sharp rocks and uneven surfaces. The trail is moderate but requires a bit of careful footing.

  • In this case, wearing hiking sandals with thick soles and strong straps could be adequate for the flatter sections of the trail. However, be extra cautious around jagged rocks.
  • If you're doing the Kīlauea Iki Trail or any trail near active lava areas, it might be better to wear tennis shoes or hiking shoes that provide more cushioning and support, especially for the volcanic rock terrain.

3. Weather Considerations:

The weather in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers and mist, especially at higher elevations. Be prepared for slippery conditions if it rains, as lava rock can become quite slick when wet. If you wear sandals, ensure they have good grip to prevent slipping. Tennis shoes typically offer better grip on wet and slippery terrain.

4. Safety Tips:

  • Wear sun protection, as even on overcast days, the sun can be strong at the park.
  • Bring plenty of water, as hikes in volcanic areas can be strenuous.
  • Check trail conditions and be aware of any hazards or closures before heading out, especially if there is any volcanic activity.

In summary, if your hiking sandals are designed for rugged use and provide ample support and grip, they should be fine for many trails in the park. However, for rougher trails with sharp rocks or if you want more foot protection, tennis shoes might be a better choice. Make sure you choose what feels most comfortable and secure for you while navigating the park's unique terrain.

Enjoy your hike, and be sure to take in the breathtaking views of the volcanic landscapes!
