Learning to paddleboard

We (3 adults) will be staying in FL for 2 days before boarding our cruise and would like to learn to paddleboard on one of the days. We will be staying on SW 8th Ave and wont have a car but can use uber to get around. Can someone suggest what may be best for us? Hoping to walk to spend time on Los Olas if it’s not too far away.

Fort Lauderdale is an excellent place to learn paddleboarding, especially with its calm waterways and easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic coast. Since you’ll be staying on SW 8th Ave, you are relatively close to central areas like Las Olas Boulevard and the beach, and rideshare services like Uber can get you to nearby paddleboarding locations easily.

For beginners, it’s ideal to choose a spot with calm water, minimal boat traffic, and experienced instructors. You have a few good options:

  • Fort Lauderdale Paddleboard Co: Located near the beach and Intracoastal Waterway, they offer beginner lessons, group lessons, and rental packages. They provide all equipment, including boards and life jackets, and can teach you the basics of balance, paddling, and safety.
  • Sup At Sunrise: Based closer to Las Olas and the downtown canals, they offer short beginner lessons and guided tours. Perfect if you want to combine a lesson with some sightseeing along the waterways.
  • Blue Moon Outdoor Adventures: Offers lessons on calmer water areas in Fort Lauderdale and also provides guided eco-tours, which is fun if you want to spend more time on the water and see local wildlife.

Tips for your paddleboarding day:

  • Book your lesson in advance, especially since your stay is short and this is peak season.
  • Wear lightweight, quick-drying clothes and bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.
  • If you want to explore Las Olas, consider a short Uber ride there after your lesson. The area is very walkable, with shops and restaurants along the canal.
  • Some lessons may offer pickup from your hotel, so ask about that to save time and hassle.

In summary, with just two days in Fort Lauderdale, scheduling a morning or early afternoon paddleboard lesson with one of the beginner-friendly companies is ideal. You can then relax and explore Las Olas or the beachfront in the afternoon, enjoying a full, balanced day without the stress of needing a car.
