Introducing Wu Zixu's Tomb

Wu Zixu was born in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, and died in Xukou Town, Wu County, Jiangsu Province (which belonged to the State of Wu during the Warring States Period). Tombs of Wu Zixu can be found in both locations. He was a high-ranking official, military strategist, and tactician of the State of Wu during the late Spring and Autumn Period.

Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian" records that Wu Zixu died in the State of Wu, but his tomb is located in his hometown, Guanghuafu Village. Why? Local residents of Guanghua (now renamed Laohekou) have a legend that after Wu Yuan was killed by King Fuchai of Wu, officials, gentry, and villagers from his hometown secretly transported his remains back for burial. To prevent tomb robbery, a total of one hundred tombs were built: ninety-nine mock tombs were buried west of the river (west of the Han River, now part of Gucheng County, formerly part of Guanghua), while the true tomb was located east of the river, where a temple was also built.

Wu Zixu's tomb still exists in Tiejianggou Village, Chenjiagang Village Committee, Fujiazhai Town, Laohekou City (Chenjiagang was formerly part of Fucun Township). The tomb, facing south and north, is 13 meters long, 10 meters wide, and 3.5 meters high. Stone tools are still found on the tomb. The Suzhou tomb mound is about 1 meter high, and the mound is built of granite. A stele in front of the tomb reads "Tomb of Wu Xiangguo Wu Gong." Other stele commemorating the hiding place of Wu Xiangguo Wu Gong and the reconstruction of the Xushan Shrine are no longer extant. Nearby are other historical sites such as the Tomb of the Two Concubines and the Platform for Paying Homage to the General.
