Griffiths observatory for sunset

Hi we are thinking of going to the observatory to watch the sunset. We will have a car and it will be mid week. I have read it gets very congested and busy. It will be the second week in June when we would be going. Sunset is around 8pm.

How soon would we need to get there and is parking very difficult? Thanks for your advise

Griffith Observatory is one of the most popular sunset spots in Los Angeles, and even mid-week in June it can get busy, especially as sunset approaches around 8pm. Traffic up the hill and parking can become congested quickly, so planning ahead is key.

Here are some important considerations:

  • Arrival time: To secure a good parking spot, aim to arrive at least 90 minutes to 2 hours before sunset. For an 8pm sunset, getting there around 6pm–6:30pm is a safe window. This also gives you time to explore the grounds and enjoy the views before the sun sets.
  • Parking difficulty: The observatory parking lot is limited and fills quickly. By late afternoon, especially on sunny days, spots can be gone. Overflow parking is available along Western Canyon Road, but it may require a short uphill walk.
  • Alternative transportation: Consider using ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft to avoid parking headaches, especially if you want to arrive closer to sunset. There is a drop-off area near the entrance.

Other tips for visiting during sunset:

  • Bring water and wear comfortable shoes, as walking from overflow lots can be steep.
  • Even mid-week, the terrace and popular viewpoints can be crowded, so allow time to find a good spot for photos.
  • If you want a quieter experience, consider arriving earlier in the afternoon and walking the trails for views before sunset.
  • Check the observatory’s website for any special events or closures that could affect access.

Overall, mid-week is less crowded than weekends, but the combination of a mid-June evening and clear skies will attract visitors. Planning to arrive early and having a backup parking plan will ensure you enjoy the sunset without stress.
