For a trip to Yosemite from July 15 to July 19, both Evergreen Lodge and Rush Creek Lodge offer excellent options depending on what you want from your stay. Since you have the senior America the Beautiful pass, entrance fees to Yosemite will already be covered, which is convenient.
Evergreen Lodge:
- Location: Near the north entrance of Yosemite, in the Hetch Hetchy area, surrounded by forest and relatively quieter than Yosemite Valley.
- Atmosphere: Rustic cabins and lodges with a cozy, woodland feel. Great for a peaceful, nature-immersed stay.
- Amenities: On-site restaurant, general store, pool, and outdoor activities such as hiking and guided nature tours. Campfire programs are often available in the summer.
- Pros: Very charming and less crowded, ideal if you want a calm retreat and forest vibes. Cabins are more secluded and private.
- Cons: Longer drive to Yosemite Valley main attractions (about 1.5 hours one way), which may limit spontaneous visits to iconic spots like Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and Glacier Point.
Rush Creek Lodge:
- Location: Just outside the Big Oak Flat entrance, about a 30-minute drive to Yosemite Valley, offering quicker access to the main scenic areas.
- Atmosphere: Modern lodge with contemporary amenities, family-friendly, and spacious rooms.
- Amenities: Pool, hot tubs, restaurant, bar, and outdoor spaces. Shuttle service to Yosemite Valley may be available seasonally.
- Pros: Convenient for day trips into Yosemite Valley, easier to get to trailheads, and a good mix of comfort and access.
- Cons: Less secluded and more “resort” feeling compared to Evergreen, so it may feel busier and less intimate with nature.
Considerations:
- If your priority is being close to the iconic Yosemite Valley attractions and minimizing daily driving, Rush Creek is likely the better choice.
- If you prefer a quiet, forested experience, away from the crowds, and don’t mind driving into the Valley for day trips, Evergreen Lodge is ideal.
- July will be warm, especially in Yosemite Valley, so book early, as both lodges are popular in summer. Bring layers for cooler evenings in forested or higher elevation areas.
Overall, for first-time visitors who want easy access to Yosemite’s highlights, Rush Creek is generally more convenient. Evergreen Lodge is better suited for those seeking a serene, cabin-style experience immersed in the forest.
