Maui with a toddler
We will be staying in Kalului. Traveling with a two-year-old. Any must does? Aquarium is on our list. Definitely pool and beach. Maui market ?
Maui is a fantastic island for families with young children, and staying near Kahului gives you convenient access to many attractions, shopping, and beaches without long drives. With a two-year-old, you'll want a mix of low-key activities and easy access to outdoor fun.
For your toddler, here are some suggestions:
- Maui Ocean Center (Aquarium) – Definitely a must-do. The exhibits are engaging for little ones, and there are touch pools and interactive displays suitable for toddlers. It’s stroller-friendly and not too overwhelming.
- Beaches with gentle surf – Beaches like Kanaha Beach Park near Kahului are ideal for toddlers. Shallow water, protected areas, and sandy stretches make it easy for little ones to play safely. Paia Bay and Baby Beach in Lahaina are also toddler-friendly options.
- Resort or hotel pools – If your accommodation has a toddler-friendly pool or splash area, that’s often a highlight for young children. Plan a few relaxed pool days for breaks between sightseeing.
- Farmers’ markets and local markets – Maui’s markets are fun for families, including toddlers. Try the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului (open Saturdays) for crafts, fresh fruits, and snacks. Other markets in Wailuku and Kihei have small sections where little ones can enjoy seeing colorful produce and local items.
Other family-friendly activities:
- Iao Valley State Park – Short, stroller-accessible trails and beautiful scenery. Perfect for a quick nature outing without tiring out your toddler.
- Waihee Coastal Dunes & Trail – Easy walking paths with scenic views, safe for little feet if you stay on the main path.
- Botanical gardens – The Maui Tropical Plantation or Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm have stroller-friendly paths and open spaces for toddlers to explore.
Tips:
- Plan shorter outings in the morning when toddlers are fresh and the sun is not too strong.
- Bring sun protection – hats, lightweight long sleeves, and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Keep snacks, water, and a change of clothes handy, especially when visiting beaches or outdoor attractions.
With these activities, your trip will have a good mix of sightseeing, relaxation, and fun for your toddler while staying convenient to Kahului and central Maui.
