We are considering staying at the new TownPlace Suites by Marriott in Downtown San Jose (Josefa St and San Carlos, off I-280) and I was wondering if anyone can comment on the safety around that area. Not planning on going for walks necessarily but haven't been to San Jose and hoping for a quiet, safe stay.
Thank you.
The area around the new TownePlace Suites by Marriott in downtown San Jose (Josefa St and San Carlos) is generally considered an urban downtown environment, which means it’s a mix of office buildings, restaurants, hotels, and some residential areas. Like many city centers, it has areas that are very safe during the day and early evening, but can feel less active or a bit deserted at night, especially on side streets.
Safety-wise, the hotel area itself is not known for high crime, and most visitors report feeling comfortable. The main downtown streets around San Carlos and nearby Market Street are well-patrolled and busy, so daytime activities are typically fine. Side streets can have occasional panhandling or homeless presence, which is common in many parts of Silicon Valley, but it usually doesn’t impact guests at hotels.

Other tips for a quiet, safe stay:
Overall, for a downtown hotel stay in San Jose, TownePlace Suites is a reasonable choice for safety and convenience. The neighborhood is typical of a small but busy tech city center—urban, a little mixed in appearance, but not unsafe for short walks or accessing local restaurants and services.
