LAX long layover help please
We’re are arriving internationally at 1pm, I could have booked a connecting domestic flight at 4pm but having been caught in immigration before for 2 hours thought if we are delayed at all that is too tight, so now I have a 10:30 pm flight on Southwest. I was happy to pay to go in a lounge in terminal 1, but have just discovered there isn’t one (just a spa). Any suggestions on how to fill the time?
With a long layover at LAX, especially from 1pm to 10:30pm, there are several ways to make the time comfortable and enjoyable even though Terminal 1 lacks a traditional lounge.
First, consider the airport itself:
- Spa or Relaxation Services – Terminal 1 has the XpresSpa, which offers massages, manicures, pedicures, and other treatments. Even a 30–60 minute massage can help pass time and recover from a long international flight.
- Restaurants & Cafes – Grab a meal or snack. Terminal 1 has several options including casual dining and quick-service spots. Using apps like Yelp or the LAX terminal map can help you find something that suits your mood.
- Airport Lounges in Nearby Terminals – While Terminal 1 itself doesn’t have a lounge, you can access nearby lounges if you have a credit card or lounge membership (like Priority Pass). Lounges in Terminals 2 and 3 are reachable via the inter-terminal shuttle or walking through secure corridors once past security.
If you want to leave the airport briefly:
- Short Trip to Manhattan Beach or Venice – If you have checked luggage or are comfortable traveling light, a ride-share or taxi could get you to a nearby beach or café. Traffic may be heavy, so allow plenty of time to return and go through security again.
- Downtown Culver City or Marina del Rey – Some travelers use layovers to grab a nice meal or coffee outside the airport for a change of scenery, but this requires careful timing and planning for security re-entry.
Other ideas while staying in Terminal 1 or nearby:
- Catch Up on Work or Entertainment – Bring a tablet, laptop, or e-reader. Use the airport Wi-Fi to stream shows, movies, or finish work.
- People Watching & Walking – LAX is busy and interesting to observe. Walking the terminal can also help stretch your legs after your international flight.
- Sleep Pods or Quiet Areas – Some terminals have semi-quiet corners with benches or charging stations. Consider bringing a travel pillow and blanket for a mini rest session.
Overall, with a 9+ hour layover, a combination of spa time, dining, and either airport exploration or a short outside trip can make the wait comfortable. Just ensure you account for immigration, TSA screening, and boarding times for your 10:30pm flight.
