Which beach for biking?

Looking for a place to stay at the beach for a few nights where we can use a bicycle? Which beach towns do you recommend?

Los Angeles has a number of beach towns that are excellent for biking, with dedicated bike paths along the coast and scenic routes that are enjoyable for casual riders or families. Staying near these areas allows you to easily explore by bicycle without needing a car for short trips.

Recommended Beach Towns for Biking

  • Santa Monica: One of the most bike-friendly areas in LA. The famous Santa Monica Bike Path runs along the beach and connects to Venice Beach and beyond. There are numerous bike rental shops, and the town itself is compact, walkable, and full of restaurants, shops, and attractions.
  • Venice Beach: Adjacent to Santa Monica, Venice has its own vibrant boardwalk and bike path. Cycling along the Venice Boardwalk is iconic, and you can continue south on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail.
  • Marina del Rey: Offers quieter streets and paths along the marina. Ideal for more relaxed, scenic rides and for families or beginners. You can also cycle to nearby Playa del Rey or Venice along the beach path.
  • Manhattan Beach: A slightly smaller and less crowded alternative. The Strand bike path runs along the beach and connects to Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, making it perfect for a few days of biking exploration.
  • Redondo Beach: Continues the Strand path south from Manhattan Beach. It’s less touristy than Santa Monica or Venice and offers a laid-back coastal vibe with easy access to restaurants and the pier.

Additional Tips for a Beach Bike Stay

  • Most of these towns have bike rental shops that offer daily or multi-day rentals, including e-bikes for easier riding along longer stretches.
  • The Marvin Braude Bike Trail (The Strand) is a continuous path of about 22 miles from Pacific Palisades down to Torrance, connecting many of the LA beach towns. Staying anywhere along this route gives you access to multiple beaches via bike.
  • Evening rides are beautiful, especially in Santa Monica and Venice. The paths are generally well-lit but always watch for pedestrians.
  • Parking at your hotel can vary. Many Santa Monica and Venice hotels have paid parking or limited street parking, but staying slightly inland often provides easier access to the Strand bike path.

Suggested Approach for a Few Nights Stay

  • Stay 2–3 nights in Santa Monica to enjoy the bustling beach, boardwalk, and connections to Venice Beach.
  • Consider 1–2 nights in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach for a quieter, more residential beach biking experience.
  • Rent bikes locally to explore the Strand and nearby piers, beaches, and small local neighborhoods along the coast.

Overall, Santa Monica and Venice are ideal for first-time visitors who want easy access to attractions and lively beach culture, while Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo Beaches offer a more relaxed and scenic biking experience.
